For those of you who haven't heard, Paco recently died in a freak accident a few weeks ago. You can read about it here: anapoeland: Hardest Post Ever

But at some point you have to pull up your bootstraps and move on, so we're officially looking for a new dog now. I know it might take a while to find the right one (our list of requirements is long), so that's why we're starting now.

Anyhow, here's what I recently sent out to our e-mail list (feel free to cross-post or send wherever):

The recent and sudden death of Paco has left us with a Paco-shaped hole in our lives, one that needs filling. Now, we're not naive enough to think that he could truly be replaceable, but the company is stuck without a mascot and Ana Poe is lonely without a pit bull, a situation that needs to be remedied.

But the problem is that Paco had a very specific job so we need a dog who can fit into that role, and that's where you come in. We need help finding the perfect candidate. Sure we've been cruising Petfinder.com, but some of the best dogs don't show up there or are still in the shelter. We need you to pass along this e-mail message to anyone or any rescue you think can help us locate the perfect dog.

Don't worry, you will be kindly rewarded for your efforts. If you send us the tip that leads us to the perfect dog, you will win the Paco Collar of your choice! If you already have a Paco Collar, you can choose to donate the new one to rescue, but that's up to you wink

Job Description: The new dog must be willing to act as the new face of Paco Collars, model when necessary, greet customers at the store, and make public appearances. This means a non-fearful, stable temperament is a must. The new dog will also accompany Ana Poe just about everywhere and will need to be small dog (Xochitl, aka. "The Roach"), cat (Pirate), and child friendly. The ability to focus, learn new tricks, settle when the job is done, handle new things, and an outgoing personality are a plus. Oh, and be willing to cuddle at the drop of a hat. Basically, we're looking for a quintessential pit bull.

Requirements: the dog must be
- a Pit Bull or Staffordshire Bull Terrier
- a rescue dog
- male

Preferences: (the following is a guideline only... kind of like stating, on Match.com, that you'll only date guys that are over 6'3" but you know you'll settle for shorter if the fit is right)
- Under 50 lbs.
- good lookin'
- solid color (mostly)
- rose ears
- underbite

Basically, the perfect replacement dog is more like an old style APBT, one that can fit in your lap if need be, has lots of drive, and is handsome. Ideally the dog will be hosted by a recuse group so we can do a trial period to make sure the fit is just right. We know it may take a while, months even, to find the perfect dog, so that's why we're staring now... you can't see the rainbow if your eyes aren't open.

If you have any questions or a lead on what you think is the perfect dog for us, shoot us a note at [email protected]. Paws crossed the right guy comes our way!

Adopt a Pit Bull Terrier: Max: Petfinder

If you're looking for a mellow-fellow, Max is your man! He's an absolute angel indoors - calm and easygoing. Max is currently living with 2 cats and so far he's exhibited all polite behaviors toward them - they even come up and check out his food! We think he'd get along just fine with a dog-friendly cat. This boy has ZERO leash reactivity and loves other dogs.
So far..lol

Hey. Maybe you could pull Reggin?

http://www.chazhound.com/forums/t94357/

I was thinking about that last night . . .
That was going to my suggestion as well. I know he doesn't fit the all one color bit... but I'm not sure about the rest it. It would be nice if he was saved though. Of course, there are so many nice pit bulls out there and it would be nice if they were all saved.

He is not the type that wants to KILL when he sees another dog. Its not aggression like that. After getting used to another dog, he loves playing. In fact, he likes playing with small toy dogs, because he isnt afraid of them, lol. We were once confronted with a 200 pound st bernard and reggin put himself in between me and the other dog while barking and growling and shaking uncontrollably like he was gonna die. I had to talk to him and tell him that everything was ok. He tends to do better off leash when around another dog. Being restrained puts him in defensive mode. One thing I will say is that he has NEVER growled at another dog until they do it first, which is usually what happens when I take him for walks and he goes to sniff another dog behind a fence. He will go sniff and greet.. the other dog will growl... and then the fight is on. If the other dog is nice and doesn't growl, then reggin does fine. Just cautious at first.

Hard to explain, but its obvious that he is afraid of other dogs when you see it up close and personal. With Truffles [chi], his entire body was shaking when they first met.
Good with people? Reggin LOVES people. Too much. He acts like an excited little puppy when people give him attention. He is also quite high energy. 100% potty trained. Knows various commands and tricks.

Now, I'd love if you could get Reggin, but truth be told, he does not seem to fit what you want. Reggin does have a place to go if the shelter lets him go back to Reggin the person, Zhucca, Doberluv, Romy and Smexypibble all will offer him temporary or permanent (in the case of some of them) homes.

So unless you want Reggin....Meet Bob:

Looks like he could model (outfit), says he LOVES people but is "low key" and connects to people, is obedient and about 50 pounds. He looks a bit more solid and blocky than you might want (hard to tell in the pics with what he's wearing), but other than that he seems really good.

I'll keep looking-I won't e-mail the rescues to ask questions myself, i don't want them to think I'M interested in the dogs, and if I say I'm asking for a friend they might ignore me, so I'll leave all that up to you and may post you dogs that I don't know everything about (for instance they don't mention anything about other dogs or cats in Bob's bio) and you'll have to e-mail if you like them. I'll keep looking ;)

Cameron:

Might be a bit too pushy with a small dog, you'd have to go meet him and he still needs to be cat tested. he is still quite young, I don't know if you want them this young since temperament can change still

Isaac:

Might be a little big, can't tell, he doesn't look huge though. Sounds pretty darn good, don't mention small children though I would bet he's pretty good. Again he's "young" I'm not sure if that's alright.

uh...........I appreciate the press, but...Jaws is scheduled for neutering on March 9. And he is Ruger's best buddy. And he is very devoted to BabyGirl and his puppies...and to any other mama and puppies he can find. Jaws is just sort of busy.

Yeah, that too ;)

Here's Tug Tug:

They don't have much info on him yet unfortunately, he seems nice though, good size.
Adopt a Pit Bull Terrier: Tug Tug: Petfinder

How far from San Francisco are you willing to go?
Ha! I know most of the BR candidates pretty well since I'm an active volunteer with them. Bob is a little too low key (like, really, really low key), and TugTug is weird with dogs.

The only dog in the program who fits almost exactly what we want it Lolo, and she's a female... boo. Unfortunately we have too many bitches around on here regular basis (Xochitl, Muggy, Lola, and MaeMae) to consider a female.

BR is keeping an eye out for me but I'm still actively hunting around. I feel I've pretty much memorized Petfinder at this point. Ideally I don't want a dog that looks exactly like Paco (unless he looked *exactly* like Paco) but I want that body type/size in a different color.

And we're willing to go far from SF. I mean, ideally it's within driving distance but we can always work something out. Also I have a rescue here in the area that's willing to absorb a dog through the program so it can do an official trial period (I'm a little gun shy about pulling a dog right from the shelter based on my evaluation after I had a bad experience a few years back).

Other than petfinder, all I know is craigslist, are you willing to take a dog from there or do you want to go through a rescue/shelter? if you are willing to look at craigslist dogs (which are hard to find in your area, they are full of pittie puppy listings, not dogs), check him out (not sure if they are near you or not, sorry):

Adopt a American Staffordshire Terrier: Tucker: Petfinder
Tucker is cute

Doesn't fit the ear requirements, but love those older boys. It saddens me when they end up in shelters.
Adopt a Pit Bull Terrier: Charles: Petfinder
Tucker *is* cute! I saw him on the PF a few days ago (I've been glued to the site along with PetHarbor).

Today we visited BR pit ed class and 4 shelters across the bay area and there's nothing out there right now. The good news is that a lot of the spay/neuter/education programs are working so the shelters aren't overrun with pit bulls, but the bad news is that the ones out there (locally) are the big, mastiff-ey ones they're breeding these days. It's like the pit bulls are in line with the SUV craze... all the folks want a Hummer in the garage and a big ol' pit bull in the yard.

I keep finding a ton of beautiful female dogs... argh. For instance a red female just showed up in someone's backyard and, after a week in foster care, dropped five puppies before her spay appointment (she had been checked out by the head of BR and he declared there was no way she was preggers because of the state she was in... oops). She is *exactly* the size/shape/temperament I want, but she's female. :(

And the puppies? All female. Well, one male, but he looks like he's gonna be *huge*. And we already have a puppy so we really don't want 2. Young, yes, but a true puppy, no.

Keep the suggestions coming. This may take a while so, unless you see a huge number of posts announcing the new beast, you can assume the hunt is still on!
