We have not had a dog priced at $1,200 yet. None so far have risen to that level in quality yet. Maybe in a few more years. Most are in the $400-600 range.

I don't "adopt out" doges we raised. Any dog from our blood line, by our contract terms, MUST be returned to us for rehoming. It can not be given away or sold to some one else. If they do and I find out about it there is a $1,500 damage penalty they must pay on demand.

There are ads on the site by free ad posters that are rehoming their dogs that are not fixed. We don't demand Spayed/Neutered for all fostered dogs but highly recommend it. To date I don't know of any adoptions that have been for unaltered dogs.

Bold boldery, bold boldery, bold boldaroo, my responses in bold, on display just for you! (Yeah, kinda watching Mary Poppins right now. ;) )

So... you admit that you're producing mediocre specimens, and will continue to produce mediocre specimens for another few years? Whaaa?

How is that responsible breed stewardship?

You are still ignoring the questions. Even at 400-500 you are still pumping out dogs who are no different than those who are on the rescue portion of your site.

Why not work with rescue vs contributing to the pet over pop problem?

But if you don't like that question...

Why is your health guarantee so short and only cover things that mean death? Are you breeding unhealthy dogs? Or un health tested dogs? I have to say that is one of the weakest guarantees I have seen yet.

I have other questions if you dont' like those ones either....

Sorry one more question....Why do you breed them so young and why is your main worry if they will cost you money in vet bills? How are you not in it for the money?

She really is swift, cute and fawn like! She is one and a half years old and recently had her first litter (2/10/10).

We know now that she is a fine mother who can take the strain of pregnancy and having a litter without a lot of additional vet bills.

Question. What's the pedigree on the "show quality Doberman dam" you bought in 1982? I always am interested in old pedigrees, and one of my dobes actually has an older chunk in his pedigree.

To the OP, just to let you know when I mentioned I was a breeder when I joined I got a lot of questions based on my website too. If you have nothing to hide and have real answers you have nothing to worry about.

We are all just passionate dog lovers here and many of us work in rescue and hate to see dogs produced who are no different than those who die every day for lack of homes.

Your chihuahuas do NOT look like chihuahuas are supposed to look at all. Breeders like you disgust me.

There are MORE than ENOUGH out of breed standard chihuahuas in rescues/shelters. There is NO reason to breed more of them :(

I have one question..

If you are so concerned about your dogs / rescue dogs / foster dogs...

WHY IN THE WORLD are you looking for them on a forum full of god knows what kind of people? (no offence chaz people :p )

Shouldnt you be looking for people that you can actually screen and get to know on a PERSONAL level?

Your chihuahuas (one in particular) look a bit like MY chihuahua. My pet store chihuahua bred by puppy millers with regard for money and nothing else.

There are chihuahua rescues that have dozens of dogs in their system at a time, some that stay there for a ridiculous amount of time. Chihuahuas are overbred and yes, there are too many of them. If there weren't too many of them you would not have to rescue chis in the first place.

You have the AKC standard on your page, but you don't breed to any standard (your dogs don't look to have much of regularity in their appearance). Why bother?

Chihuahuas can range in size from under two pounds to over twenty pounds.
WTF kind of chihuahuas have you been looking at? I've met a lot of oversized chihuahuas, mine being one of them. I've met dogs far out of the standard, i.e. floppy ears, "deer head," too big, too small, underbites, overbites, little Dachshund legs, long fawn legs, but I have never in my life (or seen on TV or online) met a chihuahua over 20 pounds.

I have a chihuahua. I got him from a RESPONSIBLE breeder, who does health tests and raises her own puppies and breeds her dogs to STANDARD

not to mention agrees to take ANY DOG back at ANY AGE if you can't keep him/her because thats what a responsible breeder does to make SURE they aren't adding to the OVERWHELMING overpopulation problem

CHIHUAHUAS ARE VERY POPULAR AND THERE ARE FAR TOO MANY "PET DOGS" BEING BRED AS IT IS.

MY DOG IS certainly not fragile or breakable just because he is small and within standard, with quality breeding you don't have to sacrifice the small size for anything else.

and I'm sorry but there is NO EXCUSE for breeding huge chis. THEY ARE EVERYWHERE, I live in a CITY and the shelter is PACKED FULL of big BYB chihuahuas.

My 4 pound chihuahua is healthy, sturdy, active and has a great temperament

His breeder breeds show dogs, but that doesn't mean she doesn't produce EXCELLENT pets.

Breeders who breed to IMPROVE THE BREED are the only ones who should be breeding.

Breeders breeding just for "supply and demand" are in it for the wrong reasons.

If you are going to keep doing what you are doing against all advice.. ATLEAST RAISE YOUR OWN PUPPIES. This brings easy money making to a WHOLE NEW LEVEL... You can't even be bothered to raise the lives YOU HAVE CREATED?

This.

You've only just joined this forum. Obviously you don't know any of us, none of us know you. If you were only in search of local volunteers to foster rescue dogs, why did you come to Chazhound?

It seems like an unlikely place to gain support, especially considering your breeding practices, which really aren't up to par for those of us who frequent this forum.

Allow me to pat you on the back for doing rescue work. I don't mean for that to sound condescending - I truly am pleased when I see breeders actively involved in breed rescue.

That said, the dogs you're breeding are not so different from the dogs you're rescuing if you breed them with no care at all to the standard. What makes a Chihuahua a Chihuahua without a standard to breed to? They are not a working breed. Pardon me if this sounds rude but there is no "point" to the Chihuahua without the breed standard for appearance and demeanor. Well bred chihuahuas are the way they are because they're healthy, of sound temperament, and true to the aesthetic standard.

When you have to make modifications to the standard to make your breed suit you, maybe you should've just found a different breed.

Hey Steve, if you want to prevent the chis from winding up on the streets, here's a novel idea - STOP PRODUCING THEM!! Clearly there are more than enough of pet quality chihuahuas out there that there is no need to make more of them.
This.

I am about an hour away from the OP, and unlike him, I actually do rescue work. I can verify that there are plenty of Chi's desperately needing homes in the area. There are 172 Chihuahuas within a few miles of him - and that's JUST the ones on petfinder! Some of those dogs look more like chis than his do.

We got a pair of beautiful dogs at the rescue I volunteer at a few months ago that I think any Chihuahua fancier would agree adhere to the breed standard better than this dog featured on his site:

Chihuahua in rescue:

The dog at our rescue is gorgeous, fits the standard better than the dogs he is breeding, and was ridiculously friendly and social.

You know there's something wrong with the world when a dog like that is in rescue and there is a breeder bragging about breeding dogs that can't hold a candle to it.

We have a standard, its just not as small as acceptable "show standards". [snipped] I don't think that is the norm, but we are filing the gap and helping connect Chis with new homes and taking some of the pressure off over crowing in other shelters in the process. What is wrong with focusing on both?
Because you're breeding dogs identical to the ones in shelters, except you're charging $600 for them and shelters neuter them, give them shots, and adopt them out for less than $200.

Wow, nolu. That LC chi is beautiful. I think I officially love that beautiful dog.

When to stop breeding: when the dogs you're producing barely pass as purebreds and the dogs you're rescuing can pass for a pet quality dog produced by a show breeder.

Nolu, that chi is gorgeous. That mane is awesome.

Around here, there are a LOT of chis in shelters. Most look like the ones from that "breeders" website. There are few that are to breed standard.

Chihuahuas have such a varied look to them. It's so important to continue to breed to the breed standard. I bought Emma to be shown and she's a lovely chi, but she ended up too small so I responsibly spayed her. Any responsible breeder will NOT let their chis end up in the hands of BYBs. They will only let their puppies go to breeders who will continue to health test/breed responsibly.

It makes me incredibly sad to see my beloved breed ruined. If you truly LOVED chihuahuas, you would make sure that you were health testing, breeding to standard, and proving your dogs in some way. Not just throwing together A and B and selling the "cute little puppies."
