I think that my next dog will be a yorkie. I never had one, so can someone give me information about this breed. All I know is that it is a toy breed and needs lots of grooming -just like other toy breeds which are my fave:cool: -

what else can be said about this breed? Is there something special about them?

My sister's Yorkie is all terrier, with no 'toy' about him. Big attitude, big mouth, really willful and ready to push you around. Also very loyal and loving to his owner - much in the way that a cat is loving, though, essentially demanding affection rather than seeking it like a gentle dog would. I think I've seen the dog sleep once in 5 years - he's very, very alert. Although he's so small that he can get away with not much exercise, he's much, much easier to live with if he walks off some of that terrier zeal. Terriers are great dogs, but they bark loud and shrill, will try to dominate everything in their path including their owner, are perpetual motion machines, and demand constant attention.

I like them. I have one at who comes in to work for grooming. One of the sweetest dogs I have ever met. She just sits there and allows me to do whatever I need. Lovely little dogs if you ask me... but I don't mind a few yips from dogs every now and then, but then again... I have a Chihuahua. LOL

big thing to rember about yorkies is they are NOT officially a member of the toy breed, they are TERRIERS! there small in size yes but they have a true terrier attitude, feisty, have a big attitude and the tenacity of a terrier...they tend to be "talkative" and protectie and usually have a good strong preydrive...they also tend to be (like a typical terrier) bossy wiht both people and other dogs (AS ALWAYS THERE ARE EXCPETIONS!)
so reaserch the terrier personality before settling your ideas.
coat itself can be very high maintenenc for a long silky show like coat expect daily to twice daily grooming, on days where your yorkie goes out to play in the garden, expect even more grooming as they pick up all the little twigs and spurs...
it is more like human hair than fur though so it tangles like human hair does. in this cut youll need regular trimming ot keep the coat in top condition...if you prefer the low maintenenc type kepeing your yorki clipped into a puppy like clip will keep your grooming low key, but expect to reclip every 2 months or so...

there great dogs, just have to rember while there small in size there aittitude is the size of a great dane mixed with a rottwiler! lol..

i have a lovely little yorkie girl. she is the sweetest and most friendliest dog. we also have 3 cats and it is so much fun watching them run around the house and play. her particular favorite is jonny cat, she runs up on the chair and lays down and cuddles with him and he washes and grooms her hair. makes for quite a bad hair day but is too cute. i have to brush her daily and she doesn't mind it and doing her hair up is no trouble. she woke me up with incessant barking one nite, and for good reason there was an attempted break in next door. she barks when someone comes in the yard. she is my little guard dog and does a good job. she is a real people person and sleeps with us in the bed. wouldn't have it any other way. she has just turned one and all the cats were grown adults when i brought her home. with a little patience and careful watching all came to accept each other. she is very concerned about my supper and does a superb job of guarding it, no cats allowed or they get chased away with a telling off. she is so joyful and i'm so glad i'm hers. before i got her i did a lot of research on the internet. the only thing i wish is they hadn't loped off her tail. my friend breeds yorkies and isn't cutting the tails anymore and they have the cutest little tail. looks like a feather and has a lovely wag. yorkies are prone to teeth problems and should be allowed to chew all the time. i had to have some of her teeth pulled as they were baby teeth and her permaments were coming in right beside them. and she chews a lot. got enzadent chews from the vet for her. big ones she likes them better then the small ones and they last longer. i hope you will enjoy your new yorkie as much as i love my abina..:)

Don't know much about them.. But I am FROM Yorkshire - does that help? :D

Big dogs in little bodies as far as I am aware. They are terriers - bred to be fearless!
