TOTW - salmon formula

We've tried at least a half dozen different foods, and determined that Lucy is allergic to chicken, beef, buffalo, and lamb. Salmon isn't great, but it's much better.

barb - how are you liking the nature's logic? they just started carrying it at the petstore where i buy my dogfood.

i switch brands a lot. most recently i've been feeding nature's variety prairie (which is what steve was eating when he came to me) or taste of the wild. all three dogs do well on both. mushroom likes the totw because he gets to eat more because it's lower calorie than a lot of the foods i feed.

Taste Of The Wild reminds of something I have been meaning to ask. From what I have seen of that, it is an "all life stages" formula. I'm sort of leary of that because differant life stages require different nutrition. So, I guess my question is, is that really as healthy for a puppy as an adult?

Jen
What do you mean by "different life stages require different nutrition"? In the wild, do dogs/wolves eat different diets based on their age? Besides the fact that growing puppies need more calories and slower senior dogs need less calories, I can't think of any nutritional needs that differ between life stages. (Of course, that isn't including dietary supplements, like gluco/chondro for senior dogs and such.)

For the most part, different "formulas" for different life stages, breeds, and activity levels are in place only to make money and make the brand appeal more to customers. Look at Royal Canin, for instance!

Right now, Abby is one Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's soul. It's much better then what she WAS on before I came into the picture, but I'm not thrilled with it. She still has eye boogers, and I think her coat could look better.

BUT- the good news is that soon we're switching to Fromm's Four Star Nutritionals and then she also gets a few RAW meals a week.

This past weekend, she got some chicken hearts and some RMBs and she loved them.

Kroger also has some ox tails, beef liver, and chicken legs on sale for very cheap, so I bet we'll get some of those this week too.

You are very right about that, I havn't thought of it that way. I worked for a vet many years ago, and at that time he always said adult food was fine for puppies, that they would still grow to their normal mature size, only slower.(I think he was refering to large breeds) But I have since heard that it is now found to stunt their growth. At the same time, what you said makes the most sense. I have never seen a wolf or coyote stunted.

Raw, with Innova EVO sometimes (like when I run out, or when we go camping)

Tucker gets Taste of the Wild, though

Finn is currently fed California Natural puppy kibble, with a raw bone or two every week. I'll probably start transitioning him to TOTW once this Cali Natural bag has about a third left.

Livestock guardian dogs, Cord and Ted, and Jetta the Border Jack foster: Eagle Pack Power supplemented with raw meaty bones and other fresh foods.

Maggie, Gus, Lynn, and Zhi: Orijen Senior plus raw meaty bones and other fresh foods.

Sam: Orijen Puppy plus raw meaty bones and other fresh foods. I'll be switching him to Legacy Adult next bag, as he's six months old now. We'll see how that goes. I like that it's green pea based instead of potato based.

Raw meat and kibble (ratio depends on activity level and climate). Which kibble depends on what I happened to buy since I rotate every bag. Right now they're eating Evo RM but I also get regular Evo, Orijen, Wellness CORE, Legacy, Solid Gold (Barking at the Moon and Hundenflocken), Nature's VAriety and a few others... In the winter all kibble is grain-free with a high k/cal. During the summer since warm weather means reduced excercise I'm less picky about the kibble but maintain high quality.

ETA: I supplement too with Fish Oil (espeically during shedding season!), Glucosomine, and fresh foods (eggs, fruits, veggies, etc)

Ginger has eaten a variety. She has megaesophagus, so can only have very small kibbles (she ate a canned food gruel for over a year before deciding she no longer wanted canned food and refused all but kibble) She was eating Halo's salmon formula, which she enjoyed along with Aesop, but now that he switched the kibbles are too large. So I'm going to go kibble experimenting to find something with tiny bites.

The smallest kibble I have found is Tiberwolf Organics Grain-Free Chicken formula.. forget exactly what its called. We fed it for a while and the dogs looked good on it. The kibbles are seriously tiny.

To the OP, we feed raw here. The dogs occasionally get kibble. When I forget to thaw something they usually get some variety of Taste of the Wild. I can buy it locally, so I haven't switched up in a while. When I was having to order dog food I would switch foods quite often.

i realy like the merrik, but unfortunatly its expensive...

now im debating between going to kirkland (costcos) and going raw, or doing both...
im leaning towards raw though.
