Vibes he pulls through!!!

Hydration is the key thing. Smkie has told me a few stories of nursing pups with parvo back to health in her younger days, accomplished mostly by keeping them warm and still under her shirt with a SubQ IV in keeping them hydrated.

He still has the IV in his arm. I guess in case they need to give him fluids tomorrow. I have access to a paramedic and an EMT who know how to use IV lines, I just don't know where I could get fluids for him.

Usually a vets office will sell them to you, might uh...want to find a different vet though. That price still flabbergasts me.

IIRC we used lactated ringers with Vitamin B complex (AKA a 'banana bag'). Been a while since I helped with a parvo case though.

The vet didn't even give you a bill? Some itemized statement of how much they charged? Seriously, a grand for ONE overnight stay is absolutely ridiculous. You didn't go to an Emergency clinic by chance did you?

Oh and the Pedialyte is a good idea. I was going to say make sure you're giving him something with electrolytes in it as just water can make it worse, but couldn't think of anything with lytes that you could get at home and that was appropriate for a dog ("What flavor of Powerade does your dog like? I'm fond of the purple myself..."). If you can get him to eat then that'd solve that problem but it's really hard to get a parvo dog to eat much. That's another benefit of Lactated ringer's solution: it has the electrolytes in it.

Also don't sweat the IV line, they're extremely easy to use. The critical part is making sure the hose is clear of air first (run it for a couple of drops), after that there's not much to worry about other than height and making sure the dog doesn't chew on it. The hard part (getting it in the freaking vein) has already been done for you.

Well, I know about ringers lactate, but I just wanted to let you guys know I really REALLY appreciate the kind words of advice, and the vibes and hugs, but Sheldon passed away sometime last night. I knew he wasn't looking good when I left, but I was hoping he'd pull through.

Thank you guys. I'm going to go be with my mom now. Sheldon was an awesome dog.

Hey GO, this is what we were charged for

Office Visit - 39.00

Fecal - 19.50

Parvo Test - 59.00

IV Cath - 36.00

Fluid Therapy - 95.00

Cefazolin Inj - 30.50

B-Vitamine Inj - 19.50

Metoclopramide/ Reglan Inj 29.00

Hosp Care Isolation - 35.00

Cephalexin 500mg (14) - 13.40

Propectalin Anti Diarrhea tabs (9) - 12.85

Cerenia blister pack 24mg tabs - 13.48

And state sales tax at 2.78

The total was 398.01 because they refunded a credit for the IV removal today. They had already charged for that. We went and got the credit back. They wouldn't take the medicine back, even though we never even got a chance to give it to him.

I also don't know what the hell the did a fecal and a parvo test for. They SAID it was parvo when they smelled him.

I'm sorry to hear he went. Parvo is a tough disease to kick.

It looks like it just all added up. I do think y'all got ripped on IV (charging for the fluids AND the catheterization? C'mon...) and the cephalexin though. Also charging you for an exam and then charging for hospital care was also kinda shitty. We either charge for either-or, not both, because our "hospital care" line item includes an exam every day that it's charged. And parvo tests are so iffy it's not even worth it to test them most the time, especially not at $60. Has to do with the conjugate used.

Sorry that you got taken for a ride and have nothing to show for it. That was really shitty of them. I understand having to make ends meet (and I do think vets in general undervalue their services) but they seemed to be charging you just to charge you.

That's what I was thinking. I didn't really say anything to Mom about it. I don't want to really bring it up.

Thank you for all the well wishes everyone. We buried him this morning in the backyard on a rise, so he can see the whole yard.
