If the Vet has not done a X Ray of the stomac, I would ask him to do one to see if the dog has any foreign objects in there. Foreign objects can cause alot of different medical problems

an 8 month old puppy is pretty strong, so don't worry so much
if your Vet says maybe Giardia now - well the medication you were given for coccidia also kills Giardia

sometimes a second dose is needed to kill this completley
I know allot of maybes but MAYBE the little guys digestion track is a bit
irritated from the medication and a few more days of boiled hamburg and rice should help

no, not hip displasia. hip displasia is not growing pains and does not go away. this is just growing pains and according to my vets (there are 4 of them at the same clinic. father and son, 2 unrelated but all really good) and my previous 2 vets long ago...it almost always appears to be something with the digestive tract. I cannot for the life of me remember the name but they did call it growing pains. shoot, the drug they give for it is Previcox (your vet might know the name if he knows what drug they give for it). They told me that usually a major symptom is a limp which can move from leg to leg but that it isnt uncommon for a dog to not have any limp at all. it is something that goes away with time usually and isnt in the joints (hip/elbow displasia is in the joints) but in the bone, the long part of the bone.

Hi Panzer,
I haven't seen him limp or anything ... he walks and runs normally.
I am having him X-rayed this week anyways.

Regards

how's our pup feeling today???? better I hope!
Thanks 4 asking Debi. He's eating, drinking and , thank God, has not vomited. But he's still not 100% himself. He seems to be kind of lazy and sleepy. Stretching his body a lot more often and longer than he used to. I am a bit concerned because the vet said that Flagyl could cause pain and stiffness.
Roy doesn't seem to be in pain, at least not that I can tell. Fecal exam results for Giardia are not in yet and I am still waiting.

Thanks again

I wish he would just sit long enough to let me massage him. No way Jose. He brings the ball and wants to play fetch :) which is a good sign.
Thanks for your concern Debi and for thinking of him.
I'll definitely keep you all posted

I hope he's ok. I went to a vet before the one we go to now who was very similar to the vet you go to. He couldn't tell me exactly what was wrong, or side effects of medicine. He even completely misdiagnosed my husky's illness and I had to go to another vet when what he reccomended wasn't helping any. I'm sure your pup will do fine with you taking care of him though :).

going thru some things with one of my dogs, believe me, it could be anything.

Are you in an area where there are ticks? There are sooooo many tick borne diseases now, mostly undetectable, you get alot of false negatives, that its sometimes best to just throw them on an antibiotic.

Personally, I"ve never heard that flagyl can cause stiffness. Not to say it isn't true, I've just never heard it.

Glad he's feeling better,
diane

The fecal exam from my vet. came back Giardia negative which is kind of a relief. To be on the safe side, I am having another fecal exam done at another vet to see if they come up with anything. I'll get the results Thursday. Thanks for all you of for your advice, help and concerns.
And while we are at it, can someone explain to me what the following means ... maybe I am not as good in English as I thought I was. That's what my vet. sent me in an e-mail :

"Perhaps I should have said it was not unusual to not get rid of coccidia with one course of meds as opposed to almost impossible to get rid of"

I guess he's just telling you it's not unusual to have to administer the medication again. not that it's 'impossible', just that sometimes it is necessary to continue treatment longer. I sure hope Roy continues to feel better.

I give him yogurt mixed with his food but I can't find yougurt with live culture which I am told is much better than just ordinary yogurt.
Almost all of the yogurts have some live bacterial culture. Try looking for the natural, unflavored yogurt, either in the large tubs or the individual containers. If you can find a brand called Astro (it's a red and white container), it's a good one. It really is great for their system. Most of the grocery stores even offer their own private label brands.

Astro is my favorite and that is what I eat myself. I usually get him the plain 1% fat or no fat. Is that what you mean ?

Thanks

Yes!! As long as it's the unflavored type...I wouldn't give them flavored because of the added sugar. Astro has some good stuff in it. :) I would give him about a tablespoon mixed into his food once a day and see how he tolerates it.

Sheeesh, wasn't there a simpler way to say ... "not unusual to not .... "
I felt I was reading the "Tempest" or "Merchant of Venice" for Shakespear ... :D

Thanks Debi for the clarification

He loves it ... I usually give him 2 tablespoons after eating kibble ... sort of a dessert ... :) .... no sugar though ... he kind of savors the taste ...
Thanks Sheps

regular yogurt without live cultures only has the so called "starter cultures", which do not survive the stomach and thus aren't of allt hat much use.

JoyfulRoy, please feel free to PM me, i'll be happy to help you put together a feeding plan.
