Josh and I decided to go to Petsmart just to look around and get ideas on stuff for our upcoming addition and to get something for Bamm for Christmas...

There was a giganormous tent outside with TONS of rescues in the area and a huge adoption event going on. Just for the hell of it we went inside.

There were so many dogs there and a couple handfuls of rescue pups. We played with this adorable little deaf aussie that fell in love with my husband and cried when we walked away... there was also a litter of cattle dog mixes... they honestly looked mixed with aussie as well and there was one little light brown and white one with tipped ears (like my Bamma's ears) that just melted my heart. Josh fell in love with her as well and he wanted us to adopt her right then and there. The little pup licked my face for a few minutes and then let out a big yawn and fell asleep in my arms... damnitttt....

I'm so torn. I really want a papillon, but at the same time... I just don't know. I wouldn't mind having another dog Bamm's size either since he'd be able to play a lot more with a bigger dog than a little one... Josh reminded me that we like to do a lot of hiking and a lot of camping and he really wants me to look for a dog that we'd both really enjoy even though the dog is going to be mine moreso.

I kind of want to go back and talk to the rescue more about this pup. I think they already adopted the mom out... it was a pregnant mom that was rescued and had the litter in the foster home.

By the way... the little girl that handed this pup to me and told me that the pup fit so perfectly in my arms looked EXACTLY like a younger version of Stefanie (Nolu)....

I do have the money to cover the adoption fee and then some so if I wanted to I could honestly probably adopt that puppy today... but... we're moving into the house in a week or so and there are two other dogs that are living there and will be living there until mid-late january so I probably should hold off so we don't have 4 dogs in the house at one time... and I did tell myself I wanted a smaller dog anyway right? So... how come I can't get this little cattle dog out of my head? I've had a cattle dog before and funny enough my dog that I had growing up that died a couple of months before I got Bamm was an aussie/cattle dog mix which is exactly what these pups look like and she was an AMAZING dog.

frick... help? please?

Call the rescue, ask if she is still there. If she is, it sounds like it is fate ;)

I seriously think you will regret it if you do not get her...

Sometimes your plans get changed for a reason. Maybe you're meant to get her instead, and get a Papillion later in life. I agree with Jess that you should just call to see if she's still available. If she is, maybe it's fate. If not, then she has a nice home, and you can be happy for her, and get your Pap! :)

As someone who has a variety of sized dogs. A pap can play quite well with a big dog. Kat and Sport play quite well (both are inappropriate, loud and overly exuberant together)

And paps can keep up on hikes just was well (if you get a healthy one). I will say stick to your guns and get a pap. This pup will likely have no issues getting adopted (if you have guilt feelings) If this advice however makes you go NOOoooOOOOoo then go get the puppeh lol.

This.

Or you might end up with the deaf Aussie if she's gone. That's one who is likely to have a harder time getting adopted. That's how I wound up with O'Riley. They were going to have to put him to sleep because no one wanted a blind Aussie pup. Never regretted that decision one bit :)

I have no advice because I'd be just as torn as you are, but I have to say I LOVE the Aussie/ACD mix. I've known a few and one of my favorite dogs in the world is a result of this mix - she's more toned down and handler-orientated because of the Aussie, but still gritty and great on cows. So intelligent. Pretty thing too - she turned out quite small & fine boned, almost looks like she was a ACD/BC mix.

I can't take a puppy home just yet... not until the other two dogs and their owners are out of the house that we're moving into. They'll be moving out mid to late january and we don't want to have 4 dogs at that house which is why we're going to wait till then. I think at that point I'll call the rescue to see if she or the deaf aussie are still available... if not then I'll move on with my search for the right dog.

I talked to my husband about it and decided that we're going to go to more rescue events when we're able to actually adopt. If the right dog doesn't pop up that completely suits us both then I'll for sure go the breeder route and get my papillon... but I'd like us to have a dog that we'll both be happy with and if it's not a papillon right now then maybe we can for sure get a papillon later on when we buy our own house.

ya my last dog was an Aussie/ACD mix and she was such an amazing dog. She's the reason I became interested in agility and training

Here are a few pics of my baby Cheyanne (rest in peace sweet girl)

I'm probably not the person to ask. I've been swearing Whippet, whippet, whippet, and even had a breeder who was putting together the perfect breeding for late next year. Two weeks ago she developed Pyo and had an emergency spay. Still, whippet, whippet, whippet.

So why did I just contact a rescue 4 hours away about an "aussie" (I don't think so, but I'm not sure what to call him) mix? I don't know, I must be losing it.

Paps can more than keep up hiking. If it's going to be YOUR dog, I'd get what you want. Then again I'm biased and you just can't beat a papillon. I think he'll be surprised at what paps are actually like- it does not add up to what most people think they look like.

If you are worried about a Pap not being able to keep up. Stop. More likely you will be the one not keeping up. They are tough, hardy and rearing to go for anything.

Stick to your guns.

I'm not going to be of any help, because I want both another Aussie(s) and a Pap (and a Fila and a Rottweiler...)

If you are already talking to a breeder about YOUR Pap, then I'd go with that. There are always going to be super awesome Aussie mixes available.

I actually haven't even heard back from the breeder again in a little while and last I heard she still doesn't know when she's going to plan her next litter exactly. If we find the right rescue pap then I'll stick with a papillon, but I have to also consider that I'm married now and finding a dog that's suited to us as a family should be taken into consideration as well. I'm going to trust my instinct and my instinct tells me to go to the big adoption event in february and just see if there's a spark at all with any of the dogs there. There will be a small breed rescue there as well so it wont just be larger breeds at the event... as much as I'd absolutely LOVE a pup from a breeder... I'd also LOVE a pup from rescue just as much...

I wish there was a "like" feature like on Facebook--I'd totally like your post, Amber. Good for you for taking your husband into consideration, as well as for being logical about the whole thing. The right doggie will fall into your lap. It's inevitable :)

Thank you so much! It wasn't easy to decide to include him at first because I'm used to getting animals on my own and always getting what I want without having to consider other people. Now that I'm including him, he is much more excited about the idea as well.

Good luck, whichever way it goes. :)

Wow, Cheyanne was BEAUTIFUL. RIP sweet girl. <3
Thank you. Cheyanne was just amazing. I got her from a rescue out here in NM when she was a pup back when I was a kid. My mom was absolutely set on us getting a male, but I wouldn't leave without her so I ended up adopting her. I miss her so much.

I know what you mean about wanting a dog similar in size to your current dog though.

I keep saying I really want a 'big' dog (over 40lbs atleast) but Jackson just does not play with big dogs like he does with small ones. Don't get me wrong, he loves them, and totally loves my grandma's huge Lab, and my aunt's Pit Bull, etc. But it's just different... he can't play with them like he can a dog his size. So that's why I think I've decided my second dog will have to be another 15lb-ish dog for him to be happy first and foremost and once I own a home, or have a fenced in yard, I'll get my big dog in the semi far future.

Good luck with whatever you decide!
