What do you know about Corgi's for a breed?

We have a herder mix who loves a corgi friend of his.

Any thoughts?

Corgis are wonderful dogs. There are two different "kinds". Cardigan Welsh Corgis have a tail, Pembroke Welsh Corgis do not have a tail (or at least many don't). Believe it or not, they were bred to herd cattle.

I've got one! They can be nutty and they are very energetic at times. They shed a lot(more than my husky) and you have to be carefull with what and how much you feed them. My girl came from a good line and she is great but I have seen some badly bred ones with a lot of health problems so you have to be carefull. I hear from a lot of people that they are barkers,my girl does bark but I think we keep her busy enough that it isn't that much of a problem.
Here is my girls dogster page http://www.dogster.com/?23126

Any specific questions and I'll be glad to answer them.

I quite like Corgis. I think they're just charming. The only real behavioral problem I've encountered over and over again with Corgis is coprophagy. (Poo eating.)

I have very little exposure to them but a friend of my in college had one and he always said they are prone to back problems. His dog was older and he grimaced evertime the dog would jump of the couch unassisted. Behavior wise she was a sweetie.

I also have a Pembroke Welsh Corgi. She's a great dog, but a little strange. She isn't a "pleaser" like most dogs are. She's extremely independent and can be quite a brat when she wants to be. She sheds alot, but only a couple times of the year. I've seen other Corgi's that seem to shed all of the time. She LOVES to bark. We try to keep her busy when she's out in the yard so she doesn't disturb the neighbors to much. They do have a tendency to gain weight, which we are struggling with now since she had puppies and got spayed. They are prone to some health issues, so be careful where you get one. She is an absolutely adorable dog though, and I love her so much. She has a beautiful face with the cutest smile!!!!!!!!!! :D My Corgi is different then the other Corgi's I've been around. Most of them have good dispostions.

I love Corgis! My boss has been breeding them for fifteen years, and she has GREAT dogs. They are extremely smart, I've heard them called "short-legged German Shepherds", but they're not QUITE that smart and aren't as intense, but still much more intelligent than most other breeds, and they are wonderful clowns, extremely entertaining! I would definitely recommend the breed. Of course the parent's personalities and how the pup is raised will affect how the dog turns out, but in general I think Corgis are great.

I've got my little girl Kairi, a Pembroke Welsh Corgi. She's very affectionate. She'll crawl up, put her head under your chin and talk for hours. Have to say, there's nothing like watching a Corgi's stump flying back and forth a mile a minute.

I've heard some horror stories about shedding, but my girl isn't to bad in this department. The only problem we have is when she goes swimming, her fur will make a brand new filter worthless.

Edit: Here's a good site I came upon when I first started looking at Corgis:

http://corgi.ncn.com/

You can also join the Corgi-L List at the above site. It's a Digest that's sent to your e-mail. The people on the List are very wise in the ways of Corgwyn.

I have a pembroke welsh corgi. She's the sweetest little thing. She does shed a lot. And I mean A LOT. I have to vacuum several times a day. Also, my clothes are always full of hair. She is very independent and headstrong, but shes daddys little girl and cant stand to see me leave for school. She is also an excellent watchdog, and will bark at any dog that passes our house. She my little guardian angel and I love her.

I'll agree with that. Watching out my window I've caught Kairi jumping on the ring of our pool to use it as a giant water dish. Excellent problem solving on her part.

I have heard that corgis are actually great with cats. But it really depends on each individual dog.
Generally, no, theyre not good with smaller animals BUT if properly socialised they can be great with other animals.

My family has a pembroke corgi. She's sweet and energetic. So far no health problems besides getting stickers in her ears because she's so low to the ground. She dosn't bark except when she wants something. She does have some issues like with children she's pretty submissive but if they get into her face she growls and is kinda scary. Kelty that's her name is very INDEPENDANT!!! Beware if considering a corgi they do have a mind of there own and are stubborn :) Also watch how much they eat and make sure they get plenty of excersice otherwise you'll get a little chubby short doggie :)
