Hello, need help choosing a dog

Thanks JoeLacy, I have had a niggling doubt as to whether the rescue really knew what he was. I obviously don't really care personally, (I don't need papers or anything like that, I just wanted a smart and energetic companion like an ACD) but those pictures look a lot closer to what he is...

Hello, need help choosing a dog

Yeah I think he is too. And I'm an rugged outdoors-y guy that doesn't usually say "he's adorable!" :lol-sign: I hadn't noticed until a friend it, but he has a raccoon tail with 3 rings on it. Cool markings :D I'm looking forward to a month or two from now, when he'll have settled in and I...

Hello, need help choosing a dog

Here he is! Australian Cattle Dog / Shepard mix, about 7 months old. We're training each other right now, he's fairly mellow for an ACD, we take him on 3 walks a day so far, plus training and he's helping me build his fence. We're really happy with each other :)

Hello, need help choosing a dog

I'm thinking I agree about a Rottweiler. I'm looking at Aussie cattle dogs, mixed breeds, labs and others right now at the various shelters and rescues.

Hello, need help choosing a dog

I have no desire to have kids at all, (I'm going to get myself "fixed" soon) and I've missed my dog dearly since he died at 13. I've waited years though as I wasn't really ready for one. Whatever dog I get will be my companion... Best buddy, child, partner, etc. He may sleep out in his shop...

Hello, need help choosing a dog

Pops2, I don't really have a way of working a dog as far as cattle etc, so I guess that rules those breeds out. I would like to get some cattle again, but it's not in the too-near-future plans. I went and talked to the people with the lab pups earlier. They're still too young to take, and...

Hello, need help choosing a dog

Also keep in mind that after I train my pup and get him well adjusted to life with me, (and me with him) I plan on getting at least one or two more, probably rescue dogs. So he won't be alone out there all the time at night. I know what you mean Romy about hard to wrap your head around...

Hello, need help choosing a dog

Thanks! that's the type of info I'm looking for. I'm looking for general breed information so I can have rough idea of their tendencies and likes, I wouldn't want to get a little Shih-tzu as a rough outdoorsy wetland sheep dog for an extreme example.

Hello, need help choosing a dog

Thanks for the replies, I was starting to feel a little concerned :) Where I live is fairly farm-ish. At night I usually kept my dog locked in the shop, (80x40) with an adjoining kennel. I'm not too worried about cougars or coyotes that way, as the only time he was running around carefree was...

Hello, need help choosing a dog

I wouldn't say the time is limited with the dog. More like a farm dog. He's pretty much with me 2/3s or more of the day, (more than people that have a day job) and I spend several dedicated hours per day training and playing with him, aside from just normal companionship. I was raised on a...

Hello, need help choosing a dog

Your reply is why I've waited to get a dog at all actually. I'll explain my normal day to day situation when I had my Lab better: Dog slept outside in his doghouse, woke up around 8am, let him out, played with him for about 15 to 30 minutes, fed him, talked to him, maybe some training...

Hello, need help choosing a dog

Hello, I'm not sure if I should put this in the Dog Breed forum, or here. If the mods feel it should be moved, I apologize. Anyhoo, I need help deciding on a dog. First, my situation, as obviously that is very important in choosing a dog: I am a 30 year old guy, I live alone in...
