    14 month lab, stealing problem

I think it's important to remember that dogs only do what works for them, so obviously the pay off for "stealing" stuff is greater than the displeasure you show him. I agree that any type of spanking is going to be unproductive. Also, I have to disagree with the yanking on the prong collar...

    Offshoot of Leash Agression

Jumping up to see what is being held in someone's arms is not an uncommon behavior even in completely neutral dogs. It sound like a young dog's curiosity getting the better of him! I would work on cues like "stay" and "leave it" in order to train him to have a different response eventually...

    How to enhance positive reinforcement

Have had some clients go so far as to use cooked salmon for training classes with their low drive dog. I think it is also available in a dried (expensive) form for less mess! Salmon has seemed to get good responses. Also, it often takes time to figure out a low drive dog's motivation. One...

    looking for help

How old is the dog and what do you do now when when she mounts your daughter? I also would like some more details about what other dominant behaviors you see, if any, and how you handle them. Mounting behaviors can stem from different issues, but are usually easy to discourage when figured...

Chihuahua pup with bad skin! HELP!!!

I have to agree with the others that it is likely that a food change is in order. Another brand would be Royal Canin, they have breed specific formulas. However, there can be many underlying causes for a skin problem and secondary infection is a risk with any hair loss and inflamation...

Please help :( Lots of issues w/ small terrier.

I'm excited to hear that things are going so much better! I have to say he's adorable...and I can see why you fell in love with him. I continue to applaud you for your determination to make it work with this little guy. Good job!

    Help with Wally

That's a really interesting problem...does Wally have any history of problems with other types of anxiety? If I were you, I would want to be sure that there are no medical issues at hand here. What about allergies? Is Wally on any medication, such as benadryl, for allergies? I have heard...

I found a Training School for Bailey.

I too, think that the schedule sounds a bit intense. One on one work is best done is short sessions and even in groups, an hour is usually overkill for a puppy. I don't doubt that the intensive method works for some dogs, but most would get frustrated and zone out I think.

    growling IN the crate

The look in the eyes does concern me, as it has others here, and I'm wondering if you know if he has bitten in any of his other homes? If he hasn't, he sounds like he is warming up to it. In any case, given what you have described in subsequent posts, I would consult a behaviorist immediately...

dog that lies down and refuses to get up??

I have struggled with a similar issue, but with a much smaller dog. I could have just picked him up, but wanted to overcome the issue. I found that it was as the other 2 posters have suggested, Buckley felt that the fun ended when he came inside. Now, I reserve a special toy for coming in...

    growling IN the crate

Great advice Doberluv! I agree with trying to desensitize the crate. I have done this with crate fear, separation anxiety etc and think it would work well for whatever is going on here. My whole family got involved with playing the "crate" game with Buckley. The crate was out in the family...

    Bathroom in crate help please!

It does sound like a possibility of some separation anxiety going on. However, it is too complex to tell you that he has this problem based only on the pooping problem. I think that you need to not use the crate and try the baby gate kitchen thing while you are gone. Not that you will not...

    Greeting visitors...catch 22 situation!!

In my opinion, the biggest probelm you need to address is the on leash aggression. If I understand what you wrote originally, if you put him on leash when someone comes to the house he lunges and growls etc. There are many reasons why this is this first thing that needs to be addressed, but...

New Puppy Being Aggressive Towards Older Dog

I know that this type of behavior from a new puppy can be disturbing. You don't want your older dog feeling badly etc because of the new puppy. But please realize that for the most part this sounds very normal. Like Red said, he will probably let her get away with it for a little bit longer...

    On Walks

There are lots of great methods for training a loose leash walk...check out the great links other posters suggested. For immediate relief until you get into the retraining process, check out a Sporn No Pull Harness. I like it for smaller dogs in particular because as good as the head collars...
