whoa so your tank is AT LEAST 50 gallons, and you are going to be feeding most all of them fish to that red tail shark when it gets bigger.

you cannot ever belive the pet store people. i am serious. they will tell you anything. i know many fish forums that can help you if you want the links to them.
just read for yourself. red tail sharks are simi agressive, get very large, and love to eat other fish. platies, guppies, etc are small enough for them to eat. they will more than likely get picked on and die of stress. and any bigger fish loves to eat snails. yes this red tail shark might be small now, but they get BIG. this is something you always have to think about when setting up a tank.

read the caresheets for the fish you like. compare there ph needs, etc. look at what sorts of tanks they like, how much plants....
see what sized fish they should be with. it says on the link you gave about the red tail shark that it needs to be with simular sized fish.

my shark is very placid and sounds nothing like what people describe, i look at the other baby sharks fighting with other fish in the shop and he isnt like that, he is very sweet natured for what he is, the snails are more likely to eat the others, maby he will change in the future i dunno but i am still keeping him, even if i have to get another tank for him alone

They are the worst... in the past year and a half on the Fish forum we are on, I have only met a handful of newbies that will actually take your advice and listen to what you have to say. It's pretty sad because many think that fish are just fish, and they can be tossed in water and they'll be fine. Who cares if they die?

I know I care. If a newbie does take my advice, that is less money they'll have to blow on a sick/hurt fish, and less money they'll have to blow (to buy new fish) because their fish hasn't died in a week. Another fish saved because they were smart enough to take advice from someone who is experienced.

IM NOT SAYING MY SNAILS WILL EAT MY FISH IM SAYING THEY ARE MORE LIKELY TO EAT THE FISH THEN MY SHARK!!! because he is so placid!

and judge me, i dont give a toss, is it my fault i rely on the fish keepers at a PET STORE????

IM MAKING THE MOST OF A BAD SITUATION! the guy who sold them to me has kept fish for 35 years so STUPID ME I TOOK HIS WORD FOR IT, SOMEBODY SHOOT ME PLEASE IM SUCH A BAD PERSON!

they are doing fine and seem happy and so im happy! when they grow i will upgrade to a larger tank but this is falling on deaf ears any way

I've had enough of you, Hedwig.

I have been keeping fish for a number of years. I KNOW what I am talking about because I am EXPERIENCED. I never said I was a fish God.

I never said your shark was evil. It is a PROVEN FACT. Just because he is a little sweetie now doesn't mean he will be a little sweetie in 6 months. For your information, fish are NOTHING like dogs. Their personalties are much the same.

I'm tired of holding back... your a effin' idiot. I'm tired of hearing how all your fish get along oh so well, when in reality they are going to be ripping each other to bits.

Geesh! Angel Chicken I think you give EXCELLENT advice. I do research before I go into the store and decide what I want BEFORE I go inside so I'm not at the mercy of the petstore. I know all about getting fish that aren't compatible!

I knew squat about fishkeeping 5 years ago and had 2 guppies in a betta cup. I don't think I'm an expert by any means but I'm getting to know more. I would have love to have someone like Angel Chicken and Rabbitsarebetter showing me the ropes when I first started out. I probably wouldn't have spent so much money upgrading tanks if I did (betta cup to 1 gallon to a 5 gallon to a 29 gallon to a 75 gallon).

OK peoples, I do consider myself knowledgeable. There are a lot of variables, like tank size, cover and adequate hiding places. I don't think the shark , Gouramis, and platys will work for long. The shark and Gouramis could be together later most likely, But the platys will probably be gone. Your water can be perfect, Hedwig, and fish get stressed out by others and cause ICK and other thing to go wrong. I would separate the platys and keep them with swordtails and other like species. A stressed out fish can get a disease started in a tank .

GOING OUT LAST WEEK AND BUYING MORE FISH IS NOT MAKING THE MOST OF A BAD SITUATION!

I have 200 gallons of water in my house, and I have kept all those fish except loaches. Your situation could be worse those fish are actually semi-compatible, and you have nothing that will grow a foot long. (You mentioned plecos though????) You have other fish?

First, Fruitbat, why would you recommend sword tails instead of platies? They are such a similar species. If one can't handle the shark, I doubt the other species could. I've never really seen a difference between the two!

Fish do not play. They fight. Play is a mammalian thing, not a fish thing. Fish are 100% instinctive. In mammals, play helps fine tune hunting or breeding technique, running, chasing, mounting. Fish do not. They are not playing tag, they are fighting. Nipping can lead to dead fish.

Why do we get upset? We like fish. If I went and posted a thread about how I bought 3 dogs and planned to lock them in the basement except I would let them run loose over the weekend, what response would we get? I would get yelled at for abusing or neglecting the dogs, and told that my actions could lead to their death.

Simply put, you are NEGLECTING A LIVING ANIMAL. You expect us to cheer you on?
