i was wondering, Ladies, do you prefer your boys, or do you like having a girl to put pink collars on? Gentlemen, do you like having a "Daddy's Girl" puppy, or a "man's best friend"? I tend to lean towards Male dogs, i think because of their mushy personalities. But i would love to own a girl dog one day, because i've never had one before.

I do prefer male cats as they are more flexible, come when you call them, whereas females tend to take a message and get back to you later. Males also get bigger and I like big cats. But with dogs, I have no preference--mainly because I am not that dog smart. I fell in love with Tosca's face the week she was born and didn't much care what her sex was. I think if I were to get a second dog, I would probably get a male for balance.

I prefer males but for no real reason, it's just all I've ever had, and I've only had one dog LOL. I'll probably get mostly male dogs. I like how they can be more layed back, although every dog is different and females can be more diva like. But I love men who have female dogs, I find it sweet especially when they are really attached to them.

I much prefer female dogs over males, and probably won't have many (if any) more males in the future.

All of the men I know seem to prefer male dogs, except for a couple, who don't care either way.

I prefer male dogs and female cats. I owned one female dog growing up and man was she a BITCH! I have heard that just like the opposites of sex male dogs usually bond better to female owners as female dogs bond better with men :p Not sure if it is more myth than anything though :D I have seen that to hold true in my home ;) My males growing up could care less for my dad and brother, but loved me and my mother :)

I have currently have two of each, and I've had both throughout my lifetime. I've loved both genders equally, but for different reasons.

I found a pretty good, clear-cut article about males v. females:
http://www.yourpurebredpuppy.com/buying/common/sex.html

Go check it out, and then see how your household compares. Here's mine:

Flicka (2yr Golden Retriever)
She's extremely affectionate, very stable-tempered, not always female traits. However, she was easier to train then my male, and is very clever about getting her way.

Pepe (4yr Chihuahua X)
He's affectionate, but on his own terms. He'll come up and lay on his back in my lap (like a baby), but when he's had enough, he'll leave. Sometimes "enough" is five minutes, sometimes it's an hour. He has mood swings, he's grumpy one day, and sweet as sugar the next. However, he was harder to train and engages in power struggles with the other dogs.

Nala (18mos Black Lab)(Foster Dog)
The epitome of a female. Independant, aloof, smart as a whip (too smart lol).

Valentine (1yr AmStaff)(Foster Dog)
The epitome of a male, almost. Very affectionate, a total clutz, very sweet tempered always. However, he isn't likely to start a fight with anybody, he's very submissive. He rolls for my Chi. He lets my cat boss him around, and he weighs five times as much as she does.

The "pack order" in my house goes like this: Myself, Flicka, Pepe, Nala, Lilly(the cat), Val.

Everyone thinks its so funny that the AmStaff is at the bottom.

Well, just thought I'd share.

I think it really depends on the specific dog, but for some reason male dogs seem more clingy and affectionate with their owners.

The two females I have now are somewhat bitchy (with Charlie) and have little quirks....
My male is just a big softy and listens to both of the females.

Out of the eight of my permanent dogs(since childhood).... 4 males and 4 females... My favorites did/do tend to be males. But that is just how it worked out for me!

i prefer males...mainly cause i have a slight fear off scraping of nipples during belly rubs...
Males have nipples too ;)

I don't really have a preference although I notice a big difference in personality between the two.

I have both male & female dogs. Mocha the male happens to be the model of velcro-dogs. He is my shaddow, and the sweetest of all. He lives for my attention, and often chooses me over anything else, including food :) - so it's no surprise that he is my heart-dog. While I love my three absolutely the same, and never favor one over the others, I often find myself spend more time with Mocha, simply because he always wants to be with me. While Missy & Muffin are busy playing with my hubby, or chasing each other around, Mocha is content with a stuffy animal on his mouth, and me by his side. Sometimes I think he must be a female in his past life (if there were such thing :)).

Thanks for the interesting link Rosefern,

I have owned only 2 dogs, an AKC cocker and a poodle mix, a very small sample, but they do not follow the characteristics on the link at all. Perhaps breed is more important, or perhaps its just wrong.

I would be very interested to hear from those with more experience if they think it makes sense.

I have no preference and will pick my next dog not based on sex.

I'm female and I prefer males, but it really depends on the individual. I love my dogs regardless of gender, but I chose a female this time around because there was too much testosterone in the household. :)

There is a saying that I hear that pretty much sums it up. "The girls love you, but the males are in love with you. " That's how it's been around here anyway.

I think it's also true in my case. Missy and Muffin are both very sweet & affectionate, I am absolutely certain they love me, but Mocha is definitely in love with me :D. He adores me beyond measure, and would happily stares at me lovingly for hours, if I let him. Missy & Muffin love me, but have a life outside of me. Mocha doesn't, I'm his entire world.
