Cole is a dobe and I take him out in any weather without a sweater. I do not leave him out. Being that your guy is a lab, I would think he would have no problem with that weather. Just don't leave him out our take him out too long. In weather like that, I usually take Cole out for short periods, no more than an hour or two. And during this time, I make sure he his active. He loves the cold weather. And many a time I have to drag him in because I am the one who cannot stand the cold!

Well, is he shivering? Does he have an insulated house thats packed full of straw and has a flap over the door? If his house isnt insulated, or has no door, or is lacking in straw, stop whatever you're doing and get some ASAP! Also, what temps is he use to? That plays a big factor. If he's not use to those temps, then yes, he's probably a bit chilly.
If your parents still wont let him in, best thing you can do is get his house taken care of, feed him a high fat food twice a day, and suppliment him with oil/fat. Also, get his blood pumping. Play ball, go for a walk, wrestle, what ever he likes to do, works wonders. I would be most concerned with his ears and belly. Go out often and check for frostbite. If any parts of his skin start feeling hard, ignore your parents and bring him in ASAP!

Labs are double coated dogs. Their coats are designed to insulate them in cold, frigid water. It does the job in cold, frigid temperatures too.

Being in Canada, I'm a "celcius" girl :D - so I found a temperature converter to find out what 10 degrees farenheit is. LOL. That is -12 celcius, and no, I don't believe that's too cold. BUT.... if he's shivering when he comes in, yes, it's too cold. If he's happy outside and not wanting to come in, then no, it's not too cold. It depends on the dog. It depends on how thick his undercoat is.

sounds like this is an "outside" dog, "cause we only usually bring him inside if it gets to -10"

i personally feel that dogs should be inside pets as your their pack (i make excpetions for breeds like huskies especially working teams who live with a large number of huskies (more than 3) in their outdoor space (even if they all have their own house)

if hes an outside dog, then he SHOULD have a strong weatherproofed dog house, with somekind of door covering and filled with lots of straw and or blankets (though blankets if they get wet dont do much good)

if your dog doesnt have this kind of protective shelter, then yes its too cold bring him inside!
if hes sat there crying and shivering then bring him inside.

Might not be too cold for your dogs .... but I sure couldn't leave mine out any more than I'd make kids stay out .

Here, at those temperatures, children ARE outside building snow forts, seldding, etc., having a grand old time. Outside life doesn't really stop until it hits -20 to -25 celcius. -12 celcius is "warm" here in the winter.

^^^ Yes, children go outside to play in that weather, but they do not stay outside in that weather 24 hours a day.

I agree, Grammy. That is really good advice.

Not too cold for a brisk walk or potty break, but WAY too cold to be left outside 24/7 without a GOOD, insulating dog house. :(

Labs do have very protective coats, but even Shiner who had a perfect, tight Lab coat would go into the barn at night to keep warm.

HaHa, there are days when I would like to lock my kids out in the snow to get them off the video games!!

But seriously, I couldn't leave my poochies out in the cold 24/7, do you have an attached garage that you could move his house to while it's so cold and snowing??
I hope he at least has an insulated house w/straw to curl up in.

well, he will come inside, that is for sure, he darted inside, when my mom opened the door. lol, but, maybe I can reason to her, that its just for tonight? I don't know. I had him inside, and he loved it, he was wagging his tail. more than ever! He barely wags his tail anymore. :( but, I don't think she will let him come in. I wish I could give him what he deserves. but, I will make sure his doghouse is suited for it. put some blankets, and stuff like that in it.

I agree. . .it's one thing to let him out a few times, but quite another to leave him out there 24/7, UNLESS he has a warm dog house with bedding (that has an insulated door,etc.). I also ditto: do you have a grage or spare room he can at least have to keep him warm?
