Due to the ever increasing incidence of rabies, the Chinese government has issued a one dog per family ruling. Per reports, 2500 people died of rabies last year. In one region in the southwestern region of Yunnan, authorities killed 50,000 dogs, many of them beaten to death in front of their owners!!! Apparently, a Rabies vaccination program doesn't exist or they just don't give a D**M!!! So much for the Peoples Republic of China!!!

That's not an uncommon law - in Australia you are not allowed to have more than two dogs.

But I do wonder if, in China, it will lead to the kind of abandonment and abuse that happened (and still happens) to female children born under the one-child policy. Got two dogs? Well, simple, either dump one to die or kill it yourself. Unfortunately I can really see that happening in this situation :(

I've heard of city, town or county-wide limits, but not national. It seems a bit unfair. I've had more trouble with one or two-dog households than with the few people in my town who had a kennel, possibly because the kennels are usually scenthounds, which aren't usually very aggressive and are usually very well fenced because of their tendency to wander.

The whole "government officials beating dogs to death" thing was mostly on account of the PACKS of rabid dogs dominating the streets - can you imagine not being able to allow your child outside because it could get bitten by a rabid dog??? The instances of human cases of rabies in China are SEVERAL TIMES all of North America combined!

It also costs something ridiculous like 300$ for a rabies vaccination there, THAT would be, in large part, the government's fault, NOT the dog owners.

Wouldn't it be easier to lean over an inject the vaccine than beat the dog to death? Humans have an unbelieveable compacity for evil

I live in Australia and we are allowed to have more than two dogs I'm pretty sure.

in australia, you can own 2 dogs without a licence when you live in a suburban area. more than 2 dogs you just need a license. the council comes and checks tour house to make sure you have sufficent food, water and shelter for your dogs. then issues a license. if there are barking complaints or anythign then you are told to get rid of one of your dogs. but all our dogs are well behanved. the licenses cost more but its worth it.

Here there isn't a real significant enforced limit. They don't tell you at all. I think it has something to do with animals per space. (What if you have 100 acres?) I'm not sure what the limit is when you are considered a hoarder.
