I'm serious, I would like to know how you think we can evoke a change in our government.
i don't think you're serious and I'm not about to go into listing 10,000 ways to change things. It can be answered in a principle which is a much easier way of living life, and hold them accountable. but people won't, the care more about whether or not they think abortion should be legal than they do about no bid contracts, positions being made for friends. they care more about how their officials want to go about legislating morality than they do about their elected official sucking dick in an airport. They care more about what their "guy" says about immigration than they do about the fact that 10 of his companies regularly hire illegals to push out competition or that they sign laws to send work overseas.

Think about it, you'll figure it out. Maybe.

So it's only struggling if they struggle in the exact same way as you? People ARE struggling to make ends meet. Lots of people live paycheck to paycheck and will face losing their homes/lives/food/whatever if this doesn't get resolved. What possible gain could we get from that happening?
yeah, that's what I said :) or....... I don't thinka lot people today really know what a struggle is. the people that went thru this "great recession" still lived better than most in this country ever have.

what could we possibly gain by things hurting? Think about it. I could give you my opinion, i have, but again it will just prove my point that it's obvious why we are here today. I'm guessing you'd be more inclined to tell me why I'm wrong, than actually think about what was said. Interested more in why your side is "right" and mine is "wrong" and proving as much than look at what is really going on.

If things hurt enough, maybe things will change. If they don't, we won't. It's kind of human nature. Why so many want things to just continue on like "normal"???? and think that will be better for everyone?

eading=release the hounds;2311075]it's easy to see why we are in the position we are in after reading the responses on here.

and don't judge me, my life isn't nor has it been easy street. The gov't already takes more than their share, and now you want me to send the other half to someone else?? please.

when you're waking up to frozen water on a night stand to go to work before school at age 11 and coming home to what you hope is something more than canned tomatoes and potatoes you know you're struggling.[/QUOTE]

I hope like hell that after this month I have a hone to come back to and hope for canned to.atoes, if it goes on for long. Without my dads pay, no way can we afford rent. Thank god my ferrets are taken care of for 6 months.

Yep, totally out of proportion. Telling people not to work, not paying them, slowing cancer drug trials, and costing the country more money to clean up the mess when it comes back.

Its a hijacking of the process. A democratically elected government created the healthcare bill and now one party (and really a small part of that party) shut the whole government down because they couldn't repeal it once in 44 tries! (or is it 42, or higher now?)

And the budget we're not passing, or even the continuing resolution we're not passing was already heavily republican influenced. It already had many of the cuts from the past year (cuts that probably slowed the economy...)

Well, I'm glad that some of you think this doesn't really effect many people's lives, that it's blown out of proportion, and that this is good because the government needs a trimming and government employees make too much money.
Notice that no one has said that no one is unaffected. But compared to the entire population of the United States, yes most people's day to day lives are in fact unaffected.

News reports that make it sound like the whole country has come to a screeching halt are an overreaction, which is what the OP was asking.

Oh I definitely don't think this thing will help at all and think all the politicians need to be slapped upside the head right about now...

The little people will be the ones hurt and that exemplifies what is wrong with our government.
I agree.

I definitely think the fat needs to be trimmed (a lot), but this isn't the way to do it.

The people who are out of work because their jobs aren't deemed "necessary" are missing out on their paychecks. These aren't people who are sucking off the system- these are people who work for a living and count on their paychecks.

EDIT: Changed my mind, decided not to wade in past my knees ;)
Awwww, and here I was going to point out that clearly you hadn't heard about Spears enough because her name is BRITNEY Spears, not Brittany...

Both sides are acting like children and it doesn't help the comparison to bickering children for somebody to chime in "BUT THEY STARTED IT!"
I'm so tired of politics in general. Sigh.

There are a lot of things in this post that I'm having a hard time connecting. And since I really don't respond well to condescension I'm just going to let it go.

It's HEARING about her (at the height of her mess) ...I really had no clue how it was spelled, hahahaha. I've seen it spelled 9 ways to Sunday, I even have a good friend who named her daughter Bryttni, so ya...guess I better take the easy way and say Spears if I have need in the future :rofl1:

Ok!!!!! Obviously some divide.... !!!

All sounds a bit crazy.... As a local government worker I'd be a bit worried if I was told not to turn up!!! Although I'm front line so lucky in some respect.

Hahaha I just had to comment on it because a few days ago I saw something on BuzzFeed with a bunch of animated gifs of Britney "reacting" to people spelling her name wrong. So it made me laugh. XD

The media as a whole does their best to stoke the fires of a divide. It's fun to have people point fingers and go "REPUBLICANS THIS" or "DEMOCRATS THAT." Or something.

We may not be getting another female gorilla anytime soon, since the National Zoo is shut down, and that's where she was going to come from. Our Mexican Wolf move (shipping ours out for retirement and getting a breeding pair in) is also a no-go now since they're government-owned animals. Our new pure bison won't be coming in anytime soon since the nature reserve they're from is a national park. So yeah, it affects us.

Northern Virginia is not a good place to be right now. So many families were already suffering from the furloughs, and now this. It's really scary. Nearly every single household in my area is affected in some way. These people just want to work.

:(

For once, I'm really glad I'm still in school and not in the workforce. Because if I was, I'd most likely be employed by the DNR fixing up ecosystems and such.. generally important for the world to survive long term.

Apparently not important enough to pay people to do.

I think that basically if you have a job connected with the federal government you are negatively effected and if you don't you really are not. I don't think that anyone believes that nobody is negatively effected. I would like to see congress lose their current pay, as well as the ability to vote themselves pay raises over this.

The DNR might not actually be effected-I think that might be a state thing? I know that Indiana's DNR has been making announcements that all of the state parks are still open (because the national ones are not).

I think what RTH is saying is that often it takes a big painful (one way or another) event like this to shake the population out of its apathy. Yes, public outcry can make a difference (look at the recent Syria situation). The truth is that the surest way to make sure something like this will happen again is to say "what's the point--nothing will ever change anyway."

For the record, most people I know who have been affected, does not have a job connected to a government in anyway. It's definitely affecting other people.

IDK, at least in this area, most people are not directly effected. They may be inconvinenced, but not truly facing any kind real hardship as a result. Again that doesn't mean everything is a-ok, but it's not the country has fallen apart as a result of the shutdown. I can't think of anyone I know in RL who is directly effected. Most people I know connected with government deal with the state, which is still up and running.

I don't think she was talking about other countries Jess.....and I agree with Sally when it comes to the USA. A whole bunch of 'civilians' working for the government here are definitely affected.......something like 800,000 they've said?? Otherwise, the rest of us feel no pangs from this........YET at least.

So let's compare. 800,000 'non essential' workers are laid off. Seems like a very small percentage........especially compared to how many lay offs there were of 'regular civilians' a few years back, (un employment in Indiana is still something like 8%) and a small number compared to how many companies have closed up and been shipped over seas laying off their work force too.

So ya, I'm sure there ARE families hurting and I'm sad for them and I do worry about them........but again, very small percentage comparatively and something a whole big bunch of the rest of us faced a short time ago. Where was the world wide outrage then? Just saying....

Right, this. Certainly no one is saying that individuals are unaffected, but it's not as if the whole country has just ended. I get that individuals are worried, but I don't get the general sense of the sky falling that seems to be pervading the media.

And this, too. That pesky little recession thing and all. I'm not saying that just because someone else had problems/worries that no one else is allowed to have problems/worried but jeez. Some perspective from the country/media as a whole would be nice. I guess that's what the 48 hour news cycle brings us too, though. Government shutdown is sexier than years-long recession.
