I'd try it. I mean, I wouldn't eat it here, but in another country as a cultural experience - absolutely. But I also love rabbit, had alligator, frog legs, had a boiled sheep's header served on a platter in Norway, and ate horse before.
Unless cruelty (such as shark fin) is involved. Or it's an endangered species that's illegal to hunt, I'm willing to give most things a try if it's an ethnic cuisine or some staple diet of another culture.
I haven't had much of a problem to be honest. My stomach is pretty amazing lol I can eat almost anything.
Also I try some, and I don't eat a huge meal of it so I've never had a problem and even if I do, unless I get severely sick or food poisoned, I think it's still worth a try. I like other cultures and I like new things, I think the experience is worth it barring getting some kind of extreme food poisoning or disease or something.
I have eaten stranger foods on my travels.. and IMO when it comes to meat ( meat from mammals) the body can handle much more than we think it can.
Now, on the other hand, my body is MUCH less tolerant of spices/veggie creations.
I have some yummy spicy greens in peru that ended up with me having some..not so lady like.. problems :rofl1:
I've always wondered because that guy off the travel channel was always getting sick from the stuff he ate. The one who traveled for bizarre stuff, not the one who did food challenges.
I likely wouldn't if it was a choice, but mainly because I'm not a very adventurous eater. I like to order things I know I'll like. I was scared of Thai food of all things when I stayed at Journey's breeder's house last month LOL. To my surprise it was pretty good. I didn't grow up eating 'different' things though and tend to stick to the same old tried and true stuff. So something like Guinea Pig would definitely not be something I'd want to try unless it was my only option or something.
I haven't gone anywhere too far out there yet but I always feel so much better when I go other places and eat the local cuisine. I think it's less crap and more pure food.
And the fish did kinda look like that. Teeth weren't so big though.
I've eaten other animals with the heads still attached. doesn't bother me at all. Actually the best fish I EVER had had the head attached and huge fangs. I have no idea what kind of fish it was either.
I'd eat it for sure. Like Coop I probably wouldn't want to order it as my entree at a restaurant just because I wouldn't want to "waste" my meal on some novelty. I suppose if it was cheap I might.
I've heard of people getting indigestion from grease, from poor "food safety" practices, from spices etc. But I've never heard of someone getting indigestion just from eating another protein source. Knowing my stomach I highly doubt I would lol.
Where do you eat it? This is one of my favorite things to eat when I visit Finland! The fish are called muikku in Finnish, but I believe that they are the same as smelt:
