I guess one of the main things missing is the context for help request, did you ask for a gift of money or did you ask for money and help with finding a foster and adoptive home? Was the rescue misunderstanding the relationship as well?

It shouldn't be lost that I really do think taking them in is wonderful.

I asked for help vetting them. They agreed to do that. Then in a later email (before vet care), I said I really needed to find them a place to go as they can't stay here forever. I was told there were no foster homes available to them through this rescue. And that's actually all I was told, besides "Meet me here at this time to get them vetted".

What it comes down to is that the terms of their vet care were only revealed after they had been treated, and that I am basically being asked to surrender them to the rescue but keep them in my possession and care. I can't agree to that. If they could take them into foster care, I'd have no problem surrendering them.

Also, there's no way to say this to them without sounding like a nagging mother, lol, but I only told them about the potential home because I thought they would be excited. I could have, in perfect innocence, just sent the dogs off with somebody who wanted them and never said a word to the rescue!

Like I said, the way things were handled was just not well thought out.

Well yea, but unless I'm misunderstanding the situation there WERE no terms even mentioned until after the help was given?
That's exactly how it went - and where the problem lies. Had these terms been set out initially, I wouldn't have taken their help.

ETA: Everything was carried out in email, so I have ample proof of what was and was not discussed.

Like I said, the sequence was: Me contacting them asking for help with vet care . Rescue contacted me back, said they would be glad to help. I added, at that time, that it was becoming pressing to get them into a different home. Rescue replied that they didn't have a place for them, and that that was going to be "the limiting factor" in getting them help. Rescue asked me to bring the dogs to a certain vet at a set time, and said they would take pics, assess their temperaments, do a HW test. If the HW test was negative, they would pursue vet care.

That is ALL that was said. Really. Hell, I can pull names out and show you guys the emails if you'd like.

Ok, I sent a very, very nice email explaining why I don't think this is a good solution. I didn't mention anything about how they were represented on Facebook, or that I felt mislead, I just said that I really wished I had known about these terms beforehand. I asked for an invoice for the care, and I thanked her sincerely for responding when no one else did.

On the bright side, a local vet clinic saw one of my flyers and offered any care they might need!!! I'm gonna ask for microchipping, if they don't mind, and a follow up on Mustard's face hole, lol.

For the record, this group didn't just see a sorrow case, they only took the case because I asked a friend to use her name as an incentive to get attention which Emily used and the rescue said specifically that they were returning a favor to said friend by trying to help. It sucks big time it didn't turn out well and we all learn (next time maybe a chip in and private donations is a better option) but it should be clear that they didn't just see money, if that were do why didn't any of the other groups return her contact eager to make money off these dogs?
I didn't think they only agreed to vet the dogs because they thought they could make money. I think once they saw the dogs, got photos, etc someone starting thinking "hmmm....donations". And obviously had no trouble stretching the truth (pretty thin...) towards that end.

This doesn't sound to me like a "loan" that has to be paid back. It sounds like a rescue group putting their donations to work to help a couple neglected dogs. Unfortunately, things went bad after that.

Oh man, they're doing awesome. Mustard almost looks normal - in fact, all he really needs is muscle. Ketchup was wormier but after being wormed has started to really pack on the pounds. I'll make a thread with some updated pics. :D Both are still sweet and silly.
