Do you think some breeds shouldn't be bred?

I've been thinking about some breeds, like English Bullldogs, who often can't reproduce naturally, and have horrible health problems much more commonly than many others.
A few breeds can't swim because of their structure.

It just seems kind of morbid to me, to know you have to use AI and C-sections because the dog has trouble breeding and whelping without drastic interference.

I'm kind of rambling, and EBs are one of the very few breeds this applies to, but I thought it might be an interesting discussion.

I truly don't mean to ruffle an feathers. I just want to get opinions from Chazzers.

Well chihuahuas usually end up with c sections Ive heard due to the size of their birth canal!

I actually do think there are breeds that shouldnt purposely be bred. Mixed breeds: puggles, chipoos, chiweenies, labradoodles, etc, etc. People are most of the time breeding these dogs for monitary gain.

romeos breeder is all about natural birth and bitches in the program that natural whelp (no c-sections). I know many other chi breeders that do the same, its just safer for the bitch/pups and less invasive than c-sections.. Not all chi breeders are like this. but its certainly not all chihuahua breedings

as for english bulldogs, I just love them! lol I dunno, they are just soo..sooo.. CUTE! I would probably rescue tho..

I think as long as people are breeding responsibly (health testing, home lines up etc..).. then I dont think any breed should just be wiped out.

thats just my 2 cents.

While I agree with this, I think that it is irresponsible to continue to breed animals that are completely unable to have a natural birth. So, I don't care if the breeder is health testing up the wazoo and titling and whatever, if the dog is not fit to have pups (and no this doesn't mean oops, puppies are too large or other such incidents that are acts of God as these can happy to any dog) and this is being bred into them, such as the EB's, then no. I don't want to see these breeds wiped out completely, but honestly, mother nature would have wiped them out by natural selection, and in that case, they would either cease to exist or be able to breed and whelp naturally.

I don't think they should be entirely wiped out but physically altered, breed towards the goal of natural whelping dogs (and dogs who can go for a walk on a hot day without risk of death). Sure they will look different but oh well, looks aren't everything IMO.

I'm leaning more towards this. I mean a breed should be able to breed and give birth naturally and they should be able to breath without air conditioning. They may not look exactly like they do now, but maybe more of what they were actually intended to.

I would much prefer a bitch to whelp naturally, although C-Sections and the like occur in all breeds, not just those mentioned.

Like Maxy said, I don't think they should stop breeding completely. But breed those that have a history of natural births, little AI, and other things that are breed specific like breeding EBs for a bit longer snout so they don't have such breathing trouble.

I think those breeds to should slowly try to return to what they were. AI and C sections didn't used to be routine. Yes sections happen in all breeds (Dekka is an example) but when a breed as a general rule needs to have sections.. that gets worrying.

I have some complex opinions on this. There are rare EB breeders (mostly overseas) that can breed them naturally. Things like EBs, pugs, etc are the 'obvious' ones because their structure is so extreme but to me there's more problems in other breeds that maybe aren't as obvious. There's normal looking breeds that have life expectancies that are drastically shortened by high rates of cancer (like the Flat Coats) or take Cavalier King Charles where you are basically assured your dog will have a heart defect. To me these are worse than the extreme structure of a breed like pugs where the life expectancy is still pretty long.

I'm not sure they need to be wiped out. That's very drastic to say and I am not a fancier of those breeds so it seems unfair for me to make that judgement. But there are certainly breeds that I could never buy because I cannot support the way they are being bred now.

I have a coworker who's part of re-developing a breed (i don't necessarily agree with it, but i can't really do much at this point), they're called Valley Bulldogs. She's worked hard at developing her own lines and will only use dogs that can free breed and free whelp. When she goes looking for EBs to add into the lines she always makes sure they're free breeders and known from lines to be free whelpers. So there are dogs out there that can do it, but until health is valued more than looks it's not going to happen.

Like in pugs... Which pugs looks like it's healthier and able to actually BE A DOG?

or

Not saying all pugs should look like Izzie but they're still dogs and should be able to act like dogs without passing out or sounding like a broken down motorboat.

I think they should breed them back to what they were.

Why is it a big deal that some breeds cant swim? That one I didnt get. Not being rude just generally asking. Althought if you have a pool and you arent out with a dog of that breed then its a big deal but thats a easy issue to solve. Sci fell in a pool once, mom was there she dove in and got him.

But I saw A EB yesterday at the shot clinic I went to and he was getting HOT and it was only 70ish out. The guy had to give him water every freaking 4 minutes or so. Are they cute? YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES but they are cuter if they are bred back to what they used to be.

I too was curious about the not swimming thing. I really don't see that one as a big deal. My cocker bitch had to be taught how to swim. It took years. She'd flail and come close to drowning. She is built just fine. On the other hand she doesn't choose to go in deeper than leg length. She still won't swim by choice and now she can if she wanted to.

Swimming doesn't concern me ... my dogs despise water and if I can help it, will never be in a position where they need to swim. However, with free whelping, I agree with reverting the breeds back to when they COULD reproduce naturally. I don't like the thought of anyone deciding that anything shouldn't exist anymore. Who gets to make the decision?

It's just one of those "If you could only save one person" scenarios and I won't play those games ... ;)

Trey couldn't swim at all. Lol I don;t know why, Nikki was like a duck to water. But Trey refused to kick his legs and would just let himself sink. Then again... it was Trey lol.
