If your show dog/dog you planned to breed somehow was at the hands of a rescue or shelter? I ask because of dogs like the one I have listed below. The rescue says that he came in as a stray, and presumably after his stray hold period was up, they planned to put him up for adoption, and neutered him. They say that his owner came in and threw a fit because they neutered his dog, and didn't take him back. I think leaving the dog at the shelter is a bit intense, but what would you do if it was your dog?

I wouldn't leave the dog at the shelter. However, I find the tone of the dogs description when describing to the situation to be sarcastic and cocky. Based on the tone of that it's not a rescue I would want to deal with.

Did you check out the "Devil's Den" (breeder's, per petfinder listing) website? Seriously gross--no way that dog has ever been a show dog and no surprise the owner didn't want the dog after he was neutered.

Shelter's don't neuter a dog before an adopter is found. It would be a time waster to neuter dogs that are going to be PTS.

Whatever... the guy doesn't deserve a dog.

That's true. I think the rescue pulled the dog from the shelter that neutered him though.

Also true. I meant the question as a generalization..not the specific dog, who is probably in a better situation to find a good home now anyway.

Good point. lol Maybe the shelter just doesn't adopt out pits but sends them to rescues instead? I know that's what my local shelter mainly does.

i would be pissed if the shelter neutered a dog of mine if i came to claim him quickly. it is not their decision to make, but so many shelter workers seem to believe that ALL dogs must be spayed/neutered no exceptions and that goes double for pit bulls.

i wonder if the dog was microchipped. i wonder how long it took the guy to come claim his dog.

i didn't look at the website, but chances are good that that dog is not proven and is not part of a responsible breeding program. BUT that, to me, is entirely beside the point.

our local shelter does. it's really small and in the boonies, but we have a great voucher program that ensures we get it done at no cost to us - if we can get an appt, we can get it done.

all of the shelters here neuter within a week of the dog comming in. so that doesnt suprise me or seem strange...

as for the generality in the post...
any RESPONSIBLE breeder would have taken the dog back neutered or not, plain and simple...
the fact the breeder didnt want the dog back because he couldnt be bred anymore just proves the kind of breeder that person is...

Edit to add:
the devils den website is flat out discusting, theres absolutly no suprise that they didnt want the dog back after it was neutered.
between the images of their dogs breeding (why must all "big name' (read wanna be) bully breeders insist on showing picture of their dogs mating?!!?!) the cursing and the flat out *yick*

*sigh* im glad this pretty pitty boy has a chance at a GOOD home!
i do think whoever wrote that needs to go back and take away the personal comments ect...
its very unprofessional even if it does get a point across.

I would say that this is completely the owners fault . No tags , no chip and no contact or flyers .

Really?? I can't even fathom that.... It would definately be a big 'ol waste of time and resources to do that around here, even the "good" shelters have about a 40% euth rate.

What I'd imagine happened was that the shelter contacted the rescue and found out that they'd be able to pull him, so the shelter just neutered him before the rescue pulled him. The listing said that he was in the shelter the 3-day hold time (which must have been true, since it's illegal to let the dog go to the rescue before that hold time is up), so they probably just kept him three days, neutered him, and then sent him to the rescue. IMO that would not be unusual at all.

Not reading this whole thread....I'm assuming if someone's dog is loose long enough to be brought to a shelter, they aren't responsible enough to own an unneutered dog that can go around copulating with who knows who and causing more unwanted puppies...

but on the other hand, no, it isn't really the shelter's decision.

I don't think it is true that NO shelter ever neuters/spays dogs until an adopter is found... ??? I worked at a AWFUL shelter, and they'd still sometimes neuter at least some of them.

Not a reputable owner, let alone breeder to have left the dog there. HE should have his special parts chopped off.

The shelter I volunteer at is very high kill, yet they still fix at least half of their animals, even before they are adopted. We have a vet school nearby, and the students practice on our animals, so we get free spays and neuters done a couple times a month.

Dude needs to get over it, the dog is not his property anymore.

When I did animal control, dogs had to be held and advertised in the paper as found for five days. If they were unclaimed in that time, they were brought to the shelter (or put down if dangerous - only had to do that once). So the owner would have ample time to reclaim the dog before anything happened.

The rescue I'm involved with will spay or neuter as soon as the dog has passed a temp test and is deemed adoptable. I know they will occasionally wait on a dog who is questionable and who they want to give more time to settle or do some training with before they make a final decision. But most dogs are neutered before they have actual people waiting for them.

Well, I've seen another situation similar to this where a well known breeder's puppy ended up in a shelter, and now that breeder can't get the dog back to make sure it's homed correctly.

The dog's previous owner committed suicide and the dog was put in the pound.

No one told the breeder about this and the breeder learned of the dog in a rescue magazine, and immediately tried to claim him as she knew her dogs well enough to recognize him.

The rescue/shelter now refuses to give the dog up.

Just food for thought.

If my breeding worthy dog got out and somehow ended up in a shelter, I'd be ticked if they fixed (or even adopted!) him/her within a week of being there. I could see how it would happen is the dog had been there for 2/3+ weeks.

But I would hopefully have some type of ID on the dog (tat, chip) so hopefully it would never happen and I'd hope other breeders would take the same precautions.

ETA: I would definitely take the dog back.

Of course I would take my dog back--testicles or not. I know some will disagree with me, but in this case, neutering was probably the best thing for everyone.

As far as whether I'd be mad if it were my dog, IDK. I'd probably be upset that this was done without my permission on one hand, but then on the other be more annoyed at myself for putting the dog in the situation where he would end up in a shelter in the first place. Overall, I'd just be thrilled to have my dog back!
