I live in a suburban, farm-like, development in which almost every household has a dog. Bodi has been out of commission for the past three months, so our walks through the neighborhood stopped for the summer. Last night we finally walked through the whole development and bumped into three new additions - a Shi-poo puppy, a Puggle pup, and a Peke-a-poo.

Is it me or are these "designer breeds" becoming more and more popular? By the way, all three are adorable.

WAY popular, especially around here!

The best part is when you tell the owner their dog is cute and they tell how they love their purebred puppy....and they only paid $800!! Did you know that they never shed??

(LOADED with sarcasm, BTW ;))

Do the research people!!! You just bought an expensive mutt!

I actually rarely meet anyone around here with a "Designer Mutt". I did meet someone at the dog park, and I asked what their dog was mixed with (she was cute, small white with tan spots and a curly tail) and they said, No..shes a shipoo. I told them "No what? She is a mixed breed". They tried to defend themselves by stating they got her from a breeder. And the argument continued with me telling them that still makes no difference whatsoever, she is still a mutt. And the fact they payed a lot of money for her just made them idiots when chihuahua mixes are one of the most popular dogs at the shelters and rescues in my city. Its sad...

I did have a "Puggle" puppy (One of my babies that passed away this year), but we didn't purchase him and I NEVER called him a "puggle". When people asked me what he was I always said pug mix.

That is one of my big pet peeves..when people refer to their mutts as "Shipoo, Shnoodle,Goldendoodle, etc". Just call them mutts, or explain their actual mixes!!

I also hate when I see people refer to them by their fake names. To me it sounds like you are recognizing it as a breed. You'll see people call the mix from a breeder a Puggle but the mix from the shelter a Pug/Beagle mix. NO, no Puggle that's just someone getting lazy with saying their dog's mix.

It was the saddest thing, mom taught an after school class in an elementary school on animals. She had asked the kids to name small breed dogs. 80 out of ten dogs were the common mutts which some of them owned. Mom made them stop and told them to name real breeds so they got two real breeds up there. I was sick, this is just gonna get worse, the Pug/Beagle in the shelter is going to die so that the Pug/Beagle of the exact same quality from a breeder will get to be created. We don't need people breeding dogs that are no better than the dogs in the shelters (by better I mean predictable and healthy, a mix from a shelter has no breed temperament, look, and I highly doubt most of those breeder health screen). How did this happen?

Right now I'm posting from daycare, and I can take a peek out the window and count no less than three "Goldendoodles". And that's just counting the dogs that boarded last night. I could probably name another four off the top of my head.
There is a breeder somewhere close that cranks them out. And only $300 a pop. Of course, you know they don't shed, drool, bark, destroy things etc....
The best part? One owner was just complaning the other day that her dog needed a deshed treatment, and she was promised that he wouldn't shed, blah, blah, blah
Other than that, I see the occasional -Poo dog, mostly Malti-poos, but I did have a Shih-Poo the other day. Yes, we all giggled like children when we heard how it was pronounced (not in front of the owner) Yes, we have no maturity at doggy day care.

Thanks so for posting that ... it's one of my pet peeves too. I just can't stand those supposedly "clever" somebody-made-it-up names ... what is wrong with "mixed breed" or even "cute mutt"? Or as you said, naming the mix.

I asked what their dog was mixed with (she was cute, small white with tan spots and a curly tail) and they said, No..shes a shipoo. I told them "No what? She is a mixed breed". They tried to defend themselves by stating they got her from a breeder.
Oh fergawdsakes! I knew there are those who fall for the lines that these mixes "never shed!!" ... or ... "they are all hypoallergenic!!" .... but you mean there are people who actually think these are recognized purebreds too?!? Don't they notice none of these dogs are AKC or CKC?

"Designer dogs" are not at all popular in my area so perhaps that's why I have not yet run into anyone who believes they are actual "breeds". I don't think I could reply if I ran into someone who said their dog was "a purebred Shipoo from an excellent breeder" or ..."a purebred Goldendoodle with champion lines!". Instead it would be a matter of trying not to absolutely guffaw in their face.

When I lived the the states they were everywhere, here not so much. There's a lot of mixed breeds but I haven't met one person who got it from a breeder or called it a designer name... one more reason I never want to move back.

Working at a grooming shop, 98% of the dogs coming through are a poo mix of some sort. One lady called in to book a appointment, when asked what her dogs breed or mix was she said, cocka-doodle-poo. pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeee, stop. My boss and I never get it. Its terrible. 15 years ago none of this would be. I guess growing up we had a designer dog when our dog had a accident litter, she was a poodle while the father was a chiuahuah. so chi-poos. we sold them all for what ever the price of their shots were, like 50 bucks or so. If we only knew we could have gotten800 bucks a pop for those dogs.

going to the dog park all yous ee is lab poodle mixes. its sickening. ever been to kijiji . com, they are all breeders on the forum cranking out mixes.

I've been asked many times if Ash is a Puggle or Anna is a Shih-Poo or any other random mix. Umm...no, that's a PUG and a SHIH TZU. It's kind of irritating

I wouldn't say they've become overly popular. But I've seen at least ten of them..

And everytime I've told them that their dog is a mixed breed, not a purebred because they seem to think that their dog is a registered purebred. Those dogs don't have any history [except that two breeds were mixed and the names of those two breeds were mixed to make this "OMG PUREBRED DOG THAT DOES NOT SHED!!!', and will never be registered with AKC or UKC.

I think they're rediculous, and because of this, I think they look gross.

I'm getting jealous of all you folks with your awesome mutts and ability to make up awesome "breed names" fool people with. Maybe I'll just start telling folks that Strider is a giant Angaraland anteater, and that they are commonly kept as a house pet in Siberia to help control carpenter ant infestations in people's huts.

LMAO Romy!!!!! :)

I had a lady ask me once what Ruby was mixed with.....I said husky. She says "Oh she's a purebred?" And I think, instead of saying, "Did the pointy ears, think coat, blue eyes, and curled tail give it away??"

I should've said something more like, "She's an Rocky Mountain IceEater, very rare. Helps keep the avalanches down and saves lives."

Hehehe, guilty of doing it.

I was out with my parent's dog and someone came up and said D was soooo gorgeous and she wants one just like him. I told him they rescued him from the shelter and chances are you will find a lovable one just like him. Nooo, they want one just.like.him.

Ok, fine, whatever he is a Georgia Fuzzy Bear (they were living in GA at the time). I thought I would get the look of disbelief and questions, nope. What do they say? "Oh, I've heard of that!" :yikes::yikes::rofl1:

when i worked in the pet stores, i did notice that there are more and more designer dogs - mostly because more and more idiots have found a way to make a quick buck.

Some of them are awfully cute - and some of those dogs at the pound needing a home are awfully cute too.
