So I got a nice surprise today!
I needed to mail a large box for work today, so I packed everything away, put Pit on leash, grabbed my keys and headed to my car with a hefty handful of goodies.

I think I should start by saying that Pit's "drop it" is something that needs some work. OK, to be honest, I haven't worked on it much at all since he was a young puppy. I usually rely on his "leave it" which is pretty solid and has been working out well thus far.

Along the way, he found some old chicken bones in the grass without my knowing and started eating them, despite my protest. I gave him the "drop it" command to no avail, so I dropped my cargo and reached in his mouth to remove the bones, all the while Pit continued happily munching away. He's apparently really good at shuffling things around in his mouth because I had a very hard time finding these bones and had to feel around while he continued consuming his precious snack, eventually chomping right into my finger.

What did I gain from this experience? 3 large holes in a swollen and bruised finger, and more motivation than ever to brush up on our basics.

Which commands do you guys consider your "basics" for your dogs? Apparently my memory needs some refreshing!

A handy thing to know:

If you place gentle but firm upward pressure on any collar, a dog will spit out whatever is in the mouth.

Guaranteed.

My dogs all know sit, down, stay, come, ahah, OUT, and the all time most used command around here:

KNOCK IT OFF.

;)

Sit, down, come, wait, up (hop on something please), enough which is my all-situation command to stfu and go lie down, or if we're on a walk it means if you try to yank my arm out of my socket one friggen more time you'll get carried home. Which I have done before.

My current basic commands are:

Sit
Leave it
Slow down (when he gets a little to fast on walks)
Listen (nevermind what you're about to bark at and look at me)
Wait

Hopefully Drop it will be in there soon!

Sit.
Down.
Come.
Tell um. (bark)
Quiet.
Watch. (give eye contact)
Leave it. (leave something he was going to pick up or chase or investigate)
Out.
In.
Off. (furniture or people he is allowed to sit on sofas, knees etc but will get off when told)
Wait (I mean sit exactly where you are, sit still and look at me until I say otherwise use it for mealtimes, getting out of the car, and when the front door or garden gate are opened)
OK good lad. (release from wait)
Drop it. (Now!)
Ta. (the kids use this when playing it's not really a basic command but they use it a lot it means give us the ball or toy so we can play)
Bed. (in your bed/crate)
AH AH! (my general knock it off or don't even think about it)

We are working on heel and recall now after we have them nailed the kids have a list of tricks a mile long they want to teach him

It's not a command as such but if Scooby has ever nicked anything of the kids, especially Kieran's slippers, which strangely enough are Scooby Doo slippers, then all we have to say is "Erm are they yours?" and he spits them out and looks very sheepish :D

Bandit&Spanky
Sit
Down
Come
Let's Go - when we are off lead walking it means to stop sniffing what you are sniffing and get your booty moving or when on the bike to speed up.
Here - bit more strict then come. Here means get right over here now. I used come too casually while training.
By me - used for biking. When the lead is slack so they can pee, by me is used to get them back over to the left side.
Drop it
Gear up - means leashes/harnesses are getting put on. We use it every day.
Settle
Hush now - means shut up
AH AH - Stop what you are doing

Miley
Sit
Come

Miley doesn't know as many because she is my good child.

That's a shame about your finger! Maybe a picture please...........haha you know i'm just teasing.
Obviously YOU will know Zeros commands but i'll post for the rest of you chazzers.

Zeros Basic Commands are:

Sit
Wait
Down and
Ah Ah (which basically means he's either pulling on the leash, singing to too many songs in the car, or just about to do anything he knows he shouldn't)

He knows paw, and spin but those are not basics, they are just little extras that he likes use as a replacement for his basics!

Spanky does that too. When he is confused about a new trick I am teaching him he waves at me or rolls over on his back and plays dead. It's too cute.

My dogs' basic commands are:

Stay
Wait
Leave-it
Come (for outside use only)
Here (coming in the house)
Sit
Stay
Down
Off
Give/Hand/Drop-it
Quit (same use as "no" for other people)
Let's go
Enough (to end play/rowdy behaviour)
Okay
Bed
Outside
Inside
Stand
Turn (useful for grooming, when I want to brush/wash their other side)

I might have missed a couple, but aside from tricks, I think that's most of their basic commands (well, Dance's anyway).

Thinking more ....it's all the basics , but we talk a lot .....example if I'm at the computer and he comes in and lays his head on my hand at 6:10 ( I feed him by 6:15 ) I'll just say " soon " and he sighs and goes lay down . Most commands are really unspoken ....looks will do it . Now this is when it's only one on one !!! With company ALL manners go out the window !
