It goes the other way, too. Not all groomers in small, boutique shops are good. It's hard to find a good groomer and a referral from a friend is probably the best way to do it.

Well, so far nothing is being done. I called animal control and they basically told me I had to have video,.......the dogs name, owners name, and the damage that was done, well of course she is beating them and this shows no injuries. I need the time, date and proof and guess what I am no longer there.......So, I guess this can continue on......I'm so pissed.

But, I am not giving up, they told me to be vry careful and not slander her because it can come back and haunt me........Isn't that just wonderful. Now, they just had all there employees sign a 7 page legal document from a lawyer stating basically anything that happens within this hospital stays within the hospital, which is a bunch of crap if you ask me.......That can possiblily hold up if they are hurting animals.....

WEll that is the update for now.....

I was, for a time sending my dogs to a particular groomer that I found in the yellow pages. I have poodles, and I'm very particular about how I want them to look when the grooming is over. this woman teaches grooming, btw. she would pick up my dogs in the morning, keep them at the salon with her all day, and bring them back in the evening. and, because there were 3 of them, I got a slight "volume discount". so I thought I was set. one day, my dogs came back, and had had a hatchet job done on them. I called her and she said that she had allowed one of her newer students to work on my dogs. I went shopping for a new groomer....I found an amazing woman on the internet. she specialized in corded poodles (and I wanted to give that a try) and everything about her just sounded wonderful. so I took my dogs to meet her. she was amazing.
but, while we were talking, she asked where I had been taking them before. I asked if she knew such-and-such boutique. she said, "do you mean....?" yeah, that's who I meant all right. she told me that she had once worked there, and had quit in complete disgust.
she told me about how this woman would book more than 30 dogs for one day, and how she would "cheat" the customers into thinking that their dog had had a full bath, when all that really happened was that they were wet down with a soapy towel, rinsed with a wet towel, left for an hour, and then her assistant told to call the owner to come get the dog. the animal was still damp, so the owner would think that it had had a full groom. most of the time, they weren't even brushed that well. and she was vicious to the dogs. this new groomer told me things that she had seen that made my blood run cold. one time, they were trying to groom a reluctant cat (is there any other kind?) she manhandled and and beat that cat. my new groomer told me that under ordinary circumstances she would never have discusses another groomer with me, but since I had been sending my dogs to this woman, she thought I deserved to know.
strangely enough, my dogs, who were never really crazy about being groomed have since developed a real terror of it. whereas they once tolerated, they now squirm and howl and yelp. and I was with them. my new groomer in no way was abusing them. but we agreed that my old one almost certainly had.
now, my terrific groomer has had to retire for medical reasons. I'm looking for a new groomer, hopefully nearby, and it needs to be someone who CAN handle a corded poodle. because, thanks to that great groomer, I now have one!
there are groomers on every street corner, but I simply cannot find anyone who will take on my little Rastafarian boy. one day, I'll try to post pictures of him for you. he's awesome.
meanwhile, anyone in Toronto got a REALLY good groomer that you would recommend?

Thank you sizzledog, I was about to say the same thing! I work at a corp company, but ALL of the groomers (with the exception of one that the manager has been trying to fire for almost six months now!) are all about good quality haircuts. Yes, sometimes you get poor service at the big box store. Same as ANYWHERE. Dog groomers are NOT required to have a license, degree, or anything else. In ANY state. ANYONE can open a shop and say they are a groomer

Please report them to the authorities for animal abuse - these people should not be allowed to carry on if nothing is done about it
Also inform your local newspaper
It breaks my heart to hear of groomers who do not treat animals with the care and respect they so deserve

I also caught a groomer being cruel to one of my dogs last summer. I was early to collect him, and she did not see me at the door, but I saw her cruelly jerking his head, and then slapping him on the side of his head that was already in a very tight loop.

Luckily he is a bold type of dog, and seemed unfazed by his visit, but I told her I would not be using her again, and have told every dog owner I know what I saw.

Sadly she is still in business.

I would like to learn how to do my own in the future- I think that is the only way to be completely sure.

I, as a dog groomer.... do not understand why groomers are abusive! I do get fed up. the dog squirms, it hiked its leg on me, tried to bite me, and I am so fed up... it better be darn glad its not my dog. but i just put the little guy up for us to cool down. abusing a dog only makes things worse.

Why anyone who lacks patience would choose to be a groomer is beyond me.
I LOVE grooming. While I don't love getting soaked at least once a day, it's my own fault if I don't get out of the way fast enough, because you can TELL when a dog is getting ready to shake!
I don't like getting growled at, but I'm sure not gonna take it personally, I'm gonna be careful and keep it safe!
If I get a spinner, or a pooper or a fat dog who can't stand up, I'm gonna deal with it.
If a dog has physical problems, I'm gonna adjust to the dog, because it's not usually gonna happen the other way around.
Barking, peeing on my entrance mat, shaking out her bow before Mom gets there. None of that bothers me.
It's just, I wish a few dogs could just trot themselves over so I didn't have to deal with their owners!
