You've made some excellent points Serena. I hope Chazhound will at least reconsider having a free puppies and dogs section in the classifieds. Puppy Poster Art http://www.accessv.com/~email/tshirts/dg.htm Chihuahuas On The Web http://www.freewebs.com/chihuahua

I have considered the points. The pet classifieds is different in that it allows interaction. If someone wants to comment on any ad they can. It might even open up dialog so others may learn the proper way to find home for puppies. I also moderate the ads for abuse and only members can post ads so we have a trail. The other side of the story is that dogs are being destroyed by the tens of thousands in every major city in america. In Jacksonville alone over 75,000 dogs were destroyed last year. If someone has a puppy to give away then they will need a place to advertise the puppy don't they. Where do you suggest someone who has a litter of 5 do with his dogs? Kill them or try to find a home for them. They should be the ones responsible for finding a good home for them. Where do these people advertise their pups? I am just trying to provide an outlet to at least save some of these dogs by providing a way they can advertise their puppies before they end up at the dog pound. Besides, I don't think the pet sells category will work without being localized. And that is way to big a chore for me. I will probably end up taking it down for that reason and just not selling live animals in the pet classified section. I have a dog breeder section in my Dog Directory for breeders who have web pages. That will do. But still, some people can afford a dog but not a 1200 dollar pedigree. They like free mutts. I am open to any ideas. Thanks much for the feedback. Chazhound

There isn't a right or wrong answer to this question. I have to agree with Chazhound, though. There are so many mitigating circumstances; people who must relocate and for some reason can't take their pet (although I can't imagine it personally), the accidental litter (although I would hope and pray that people will become more responsible someday). Better that someone try earnestly to find a good home for these creatures than send them to the pound to await almost certain death. Possibly they'll be a bit more careful after trying to find homes for these animals, too. And lest we forget, all dog breeds evolved from common ancestors, and the wonderful array of breeds with all their incredible differences are the result of breed mixing as well as carefully selective breeding. It's an ongoing process, and even though I passionately wish some of our fantastic breeds weren't being ruined, I have to acknowledge that the problem isn't with mutts, it's with the puppy mills and breeders who are breeding down to have a more universally sellable or showable animal. These people aren't going to be giving any animals away! And I must admit, my life would be much poorer without the mutts who have shared my life. The best offense we have in this battle against the puppy mills and irresponsible breeders is a knowledgeable public. The best we can do for future generations of domestic animals is be willing to educate, patiently answer questions and present rational evidence to back up our point of view in a manner that those we are addressing will be willing listen to and consider. If you can inspire someone to think about an issue and come to a considered opinion on their own you've accomplished more than just convincing someone to agree with you. And so, Serena, continue on; you're accomplishing more than you probably will ever be aware of.

I have decided to not allow any live animals ads in the Pet Classifieds section. Serena brings up many points and I would not like to help irresposible breeders from abusing the area. There are many many great breeders online and there are just as many questionable ones. I can't tell the difference sometimes just by their web site content. Anyone can make it look good and respectable while churning out puppies on the other end. I think I will add a Pet or Dog Rescue ads for organization that help find homes and advertise local humane society locations for peeps looking for dogs. In my experience with rescure dogs though, the mutts always seem to be healthier and have less problems than the pure breeds in these places. But most require nuterring or spading the animal before placing it in a home, which is good for controling the population of unwanted dogs. A breeders forum and a Buying a Puppy or Pet forum might also allow discussion where someone looking for a dog can find appropriate answers. If a breeder participates in the forum and presents themselves as a passionate owner/breeder then it will allow them a platform to discuss their breed, direction, and non-show quality dogs available in a much more controlled environment. I will work on attracting more in the breeding industry to join our community. Thank you for the feedback ![]() Chazhound

Good decision, Chazhound. I think you've addressed the problems and not "thrown the proverbial baby out with the bath water."
