| I can understand both sides of this. And I have [since my new puppy isnt here yet] one dog from each end of the spectrum, my dachshund is an adopted rescue from a puppy mill. His rescue org was completely honest about him, I knew exactly what I was getting: He is almost blind, deaf in one ear, crippled in his front legs and as a 4 yr old had no prior training although he was nominally socialized. He has literally turned into my dream dog, blossoming into a happy, gregarious, well-mannered and joyful companion I am very proud of. Whereas my dalmatian boy [as well as the new puppy when she arrives, this weekend] both come from an excellent small show breeder, because my dals are working dogs and I needed to avoid as many of the breed's health issues as possible. Its understandable that some people may prefer mixed breeds what with all the health issues in the purebreds. I respect everyone's opinion; but these are my breeds of choice, I have tried other breeds and mixes and always come back to these two. The info on the places to get a puppy was very informative, thanks for the great post! |

| I have gotten several animals, both dogs and cats from the Humane Society. I've also adopted strays and friends animals who couldn't keep them. Most recently, I bought a pup from a BYB. I can't see spending hundreds or thousands on a dog. I love my animals but it seems unreasonable to me to spend that on a pet when there are so many needy people in the world. So I use my resources to love animals inexpensively and help people around the world also. |

Did you know many byb charge almost the same amount of $$ as decent breeders in many breeds (unless they are realllly scummy byb...and not feed their stock properly or give them adequate vet care) AND with good breeders you get life time health and temperament guarantees? I have some much more than I would like to say (as a breeder and a person involved with rescue)...but as this is a family forum I shall refrain.

| Hello all, I just want to share my story. I moved form UK to Ohio.I was lonely and home sic, so i decided to realize my dream - adopt a Shih Tzu puppy. I didn't know where I should search for Shih Tzu for sale. I've found Edgar (my cute Shih Tzu) at Shih Tzu Dogs for Sale in USA - find puppies for sale at PennySaverUSA. For this reason probably you call me a bad person. Probably if I'll went to shelter or breed I will back with a couple dogs, but not with my Edgar, which is the best dog for me and I love him very much. |

| I half agree with the original post. I don't show my dachshunds. My dogs are in my fenced "back yard" (does that make me a back yard breeder?). I just recently finished a small 8 x 12 building that is JUST for them - AC, heat, vinyl wood floors, etc. I only have 8 dogs (all females, 2 are spayed, and 3 are waiting to grow up to see if they fit the standard). So, I don't have a kennel and I prefer to keep small numbers so that my dogs are emotionally sound. However, I do test my dogs (CERF, patella, PRA) - show dogs are not required to be tested and many show breeders do not test their dogs. I know what the standard is, I've been to many shows, spoken to many show breeders, so I know what a good dog looks like. I am confident in myself to breed conformationally correct dogs and make the best decisions for the lines. I do not belong to any clubs but I keep myself very informed with many forums, the internet, and my peers. I feed my dogs RAW, vaccinate them, take them to bi-annual check-ups. I also give a lifetime health guarantee. So... am I a bad breeder because I don't show, don't have a kennel, don't belong to clubs, and have back yard that my dogs run and play in? I apologize if I sound narcissistic but, I don't think so! If anyone's interested in seeing my "dog house", here it is! The Morlinos Blog Archive The Puppy Palace (btw, the dogs are never in cages - unless the 100 x 30 chain link fence counts)

| Come on now, let's be fair and not use random statistics that we pull out of thin air.

To me if you are breeding the same sorts of dogs that are dying in shelters then you aren't a good breeder. (ie what is special about your dogs...)
