pressa vs cane corso

im having a hard time seeing all that much difference between the 2 breeds other than the pressa was originally more of a farm dog while the cane was developed more for the home.

there both stunning breeds that im semi possibly considering for the VERY far future and have been talking to so owners online and everything there saying the 2 breeds SOUND very similar...

mabe im missing something?
or are they actually similar breeds.

as a side note i would be looking for a large powerfull devoted (but independant) thinking dog that could double as a "home security system" (i will be learning to handle a gun long before this point and the dog would NOT be used in place of common sense, self protection and actually securing my home, but you get the idea.)

in this "grand plan" of mine i would be living alone, with my dogs, 3 chinese cresteds 1 or 2 LGD's and some goats, alpaca, chicken ect...
having a dog who i could hook up a cart to would be nice to help me out wiht some of the heavier farm chores...
but hed be a seperate entity (while raised and socilized with all the farm animals) from the LGD's and farm itself.
(in otherwords while the lgd's sleep out with the animals...hed sleep in the home with me and the 3 cresties who woudl make up an alarm system :P)

and yes ive got alot of time to do PLENTY more reserch on all the breeds im considering for that curently very distant future...
but i figure why wait on the reserch?!

im also very interested in the fila and the boerboel, but there less "similar" than these 2 breeds and id realy like to know if there are any real differences in traits, personalities ect between these 2 breeds.

Actually, a good Rottie might work well for you too. They've got the rep and visual intimidation factor (not to mention one heck of a bark!) and is a breed traditionally used for light drafting. They also (can) have decent herding instincts.

I'd be concerned with both of those breeds, finding an individual who wasn't prone to DA. Especially living with the cresties.

the presa was also a fighting dog for a long time & the modern incarnation has alot of pit & fighting bulldogs in the background, so like a wellbred pit it could turn on w/o any warning at all.

With Presa Canario, they are very likely to be DA, at least to the same sex. They also tend to have a high prey drive, as many of them were (and some still are) used as catch dogs, so I would be worried about how they'd view your cresties. There is actually a pretty steep divide in the Presa Canario world. Working dogs, considered the "real" dogs, are called Dogo Canario, while the show dogs are called Presa Canario. I hang out on a Presa Canario forum called ElPresa.com - Home, and they get in discussions about this frequently. index is another good site for working Presa/Dogo Canario.

From what I've read, its harder to find a good working Corso than a good working Presa. Corsi tend to be much more friendly with other dogs though. I have seen many, many, many pictures of Corsi with multiple other dogs, small and large. (DA is not faulted in the breed if it comes up.)

i thought it was the other way around the show breeders went w/ FCI dogo designation & the working breeders like red star (back when alex was still there) stayed w/ the term presa.

i have heard that the pressa can have dog issues...
but ive also talked to a couple pressa owners who have multi dog homes with no problems...so i wasnt sure if this was the traditional for the breed.
admittedly i havent talked to that many owners and i think im going to take alook around that forum...

but the corso, now its mentioned, yes i have heard more "multi dog" feedback from corso homes than the pressa. id definatly need a dog to be less likley to not only be dog agressive, but also having a catch dog around goats and pigs now i put some real thought into it...
i think a pressa would be less "stable" around a farm considering...

i have looked into rotties too, they are stunning dogs but im not sure a rottie is for me.
and in all honesty, im still madly in love with danes lol.

Presa Canario in multiple dog homes are like APBT in multiple dog homes - it can happen, but its not the norm.

I lurk on Corso Talk - Cane Corso Message Board, and if you do a google search, some others will come up. Just a warning, people in these large guardian breeds tend to believe heavily in dominance theory, so don't be shocked when you go into the training forum and there are posts bragging about how they alpha-rolled their dogs and showed them who's boss. (I tend to just look at pics and read posts in the general forum).

At the working dog expo there were lots of both breeds (I think it was hosted by the corso club). We had more than a few of both breeds snarling at the ends of their leashes at Strider as we walked past.

Honestly foxy, I'd probably look into some of the euro danes. They have a heavier, more utilitarian build than a lot of the american lines. You're more likely to get a dog than can coexist with other dogs and livestock happily that way.

My mom's neighbor has a black german import male and he is stunning. She has done some pp with him. He puts up an extremely impressive (and freaky!!) display on command for people coming onto her property, yet is a marshmallow when she tells him it's okay to socialize both with people and other dogs.

ETA: She also lives in a very similar situation to what you're describing Foxy. She has a herd of goats, a giant flock of geese and a flock of turkeys, with smaller poultry here and there. Some rabbits, etc. She's in her 70s and lives alone. Max doesn't let anybody onto her land without her knowing. And when he alerts, they crap their pants and run the other way, lol. He does great with all the other animals, including her macaws.

She has a pair of ACDs that live with the goats and have access to the poultry pens in case they need to destroy a raccoon.
