Are all english setters this awesome!

I am fostering a really sweet awesome heartworm positive english setter. He is SOOO calm, and mellow. as long as you dont have a tennis ball. he loves to play ball and will always bring it back. When he is in the house he just lays on the couch. he is so sweet and will put his head in your lap he will be laying there and looking up at you wagging his tail slowly and smiling!
all the irish setters i have met were CRAZY hyper, and they acted like they had major ADHD

A long time ago I knew someone who had field bred English Setters who were like you described your foster- energetic and playful, but they had an "off" switch for the times it wasn't appropriate to be running around. Until then, evry Irish and English Setter I had ever met were wound for sound. It's because of those field bred dogs that I see English Setters differently then I did before. And, years later we ended up adopting a wonderful yellow Lab/English Setter mix puppy, who we had the pleasure of loving for
15 1/2 years.

No. They are INSANE, especially as puppies. Now, with good training and PLENTY of exercise (like good hard runs at least once a day), they're manageable and pretty sweet. But it takes a lot of work.

I've met a couple that are like the one you're fostering, but they were all over 8 years of age. My roommate had an ES that was a crack head. Seriously. ADHD, the only off-switch was when she was sleeping. Of course, my roommate had no business owning an ES and that was part of the problem...no exercise, no training (nothing I was doing would stick because she wouldn't follow my directions)...

Definitely different than the Irish!! I've always thought they were sweet dogs, at least the ones I've seen at conformation shows, as well as the field dogs my old boss used to breed. Never seen a bad, hyper one, even as a puppy. Maybe I was lucky!

My dear friend and neighbor in N.C. bred English Setters for 35 years. Every pup from start to finish was just as you described. They are the ultimate dual personality dog - active outside and super mellow inside. I was blessed to share my life with one of her pups for 7 years - she was by far, the best dog I ever had.

i may want to meet some more of these dogs! i am really liking this one
hubby loves him. he would want to keep him, but i reminded him that if we fail foster, we cannot foster anymore so i cannot help dogs in need anymore

My childhood dog was an english setter--was the sweetest, most obedient dog ever. She loved to be with her people (children) and followed us all around the neighborhood. She was never a spaz, always well behaved and loveable. As for the breed in general, I can't say--just know what a wonderful dog Dutchess was.

I have a new found love for English Setters. At my local shelter where I volunteer, there was an 11 yr female field bred. She was THE sweetest thing, and has now found a great home. I came very close to adopting her myself. Not once sinse I have been volunteering (Sep. 09), have I fallen so much for a dog. I definately see myself rescuing an older English Setter one day.

I am a HUGE spaniel lover, and love the sporting breeds, but prefer the calmer type. At first I thought that all of the setters would be too big and hyper. The English Setter is now one of my favorites. Especially older field breds.

I have only had experience with just our one ES - spooky. He was field bred, and a senior (age 7). And he was the epitome of perfect. (Well, in our eyes. ) He was mellow, but playful. A kind, kind soul that was always there to snuggle when you had a bad day. He was the kind of dog that some people only dream about having. He has definitely made me fall for the breed, and I will consider older, senior setters in the future if we ever have the yard/house for a larger dog.
