 English Mastiff female in need! Hey guys...so I need advice with this one. I'm trying to become a stronger rescuer and I know the 'right' answer...but something inside keeps telling me to help her. I got a call from someone that saved this girl before she was destroyed. The family didn't want her anymore because she nipped at their daughter (details not clear). They say she is amazing with adults and other dogs...but not kids. I know what you're all thinking-I did too  Her size + bite history=big trouble. Both the rescues I work with won't take her because of the liability. I was wondering if there was a group that might work with her on the issue...and maybe, just maybe be able to find her a home that can continue this training. Sigh. Advice please

| I'm not sure about Canadian rescues but there are many US bully/mastiff breed rescues that will take dogs with that "history". Since it was probably a provoked nip and not an outright attack, most reputable rescues would love to help her. With her behavioral dislike for children, any good rescue would place her in a home with no or older children so it's not hopeless!

| I would want to know, how old is the daughter? What were the circumstances? I don't really consider nipping AT something a "bite history" if there was no actual connection between teeth and skin. To me it just sounds like a warning, and not an actual aggressive act. ETA: I'd also want to ask how old the dog was, and if the dog is young, are they sure the dog wasn't being mouthy? The mastiff in my siggie below is fairly young, and he can get awful mouthy at times (I'm working with him on that). When he gets riled up, people not versed in dog behavior might think he's trying to hurt me, but he's not.

| Okay, these are good things! That's what I was curious about too, but the details aren't clear because she was rescued. Sorry...I used 'bite history' because the rescue I talked to did. But nipping isn't biting, right...it could have been warranted. But these are things that we still have to be really careful with. I work with pits and other bully breeds and I've seen the damage a strong, untrained dog can do

| She is two years old. And apparently gets along with adults and other dogs! I might go do a temperament test...it will give me a better idea of what we're dealing with.
