When I went to check out the information; I found this link; Brindle Stick: Banning of cropping and docking heats up

half-way through; I found this;

Quote:
vets who advised that anything we do short of a full rewrite of our standards to immediately take away cropping and docking is
too little too late. There was some softening of that position from Ontario, a comment that this is not yet on the radar in Quebec as yet and input that Nova Scotia is considering legislating these procedures out of existence.

We all have work to do. These vets are not only speaking of cropping and docking. Several, led by New Brunswick, are openly critical of the CKC's breed standards, feel that breeders are poorly educated with respect to health, genetics and breeding practices to support an animal's welfare and are censorious of breeders - in particular those breeders who breed conformation dogs for show. They are criticizing our standards for individual breeds and are of the opinion that we are not supporting the puppy purchasers with healthy dogs.
If this is the perspective - by vets - of those breeding registered Kennel club dogs; what in Dog's green earth do they think of byb puppy peddlers?

I am truly curious - Brindlesticks blog has some important ideas; if you are an Ontario dog owner; you may want to check it out.

I understand that many breeders and show people will be upset , but I have always thought that dogs should be presented as they were born . Yes , we had a boxer at one point and had his ears done . Today I wouldn't ! I feel that this will bother Dobe owners the most . I feel sorry for those of you who feel their breed would never be the same . I predict down the road we will never see docking and cropping .

Why are folks livid? Are you for docking and cropping? I am judging but I am not sure why a dog lover would be in favor of docking and cropping. Do either serve any purpose besides looks anymore?

Do a search on here. There have been a lot of threads on it. Personally I can't see why anyone would be against a crop. Its done under anesthesia, and dogs come out happy and playing like nothing happened. Docking is a bit more painful. But esp in my breed where a pup might end up working, its better a little pain now than a lot (or death) later.

The breeds I own can go both ways within the standard; so no either way I have no opinion. Traditionally the Boerboel is docked to prevent baboons in South Africa grabbing the dog by the tail (and I suppose man as well); so too is the CAS docked/cropped to prevent damage when used as livestock guardians (but there are other LGD breeds that aren't docked/cropped -- so not a clear-cut reason).

However I do find it interesting that

is what is being reported on. This concerns me greatly. I am in contact with vets that still advocate yearly vaccinations for core vaccines and advocate kibble feeding. You'd think surely if they are going to bat to ban docking/cropping/dewclaws etc. then they'd educate themselves w/regards to vaccinosis and the detriments of a kibble (carbohydrate) diet to an animal that would have received very if little carbs naturally.

Just strikes me as hypocritical. Glad my vet is a homeopath (and she'll tell you what docking/cropping does to the meridian lines of the canine) and doesn't advocate vaccines or kibble (or docking/cropping/dewclaws etc.)

Interesting to note that
Quote:
In New Brunswick, a ban on these procedures was effected by the NBVMA and has come into effect this year. In Newfoundland, cropping ears has been legislated out of existence ten years ago. PEI and Nova Scotia as well as Saskatchewan have considered provincial bans and I was advised at a meeting with CVMA on Sunday that PEI did put into effect a ban on cropping and docking at their November meeting.
and I haven't heard boo one about it.

Goldens are retrievers.... And even if they weren't would you have hunted them?
