Default pain under my arm..any thoughts?

history...I have had a zillion mamograms, ultra sound exams, and I have 'more than we can count' harmless cysts in each breast. so a lump doesn't send me over the edge. it used to..I've had 'precancerous cells' be a caution, waited for months for another exam before ruling out cancer...etc., etc. lumps..pain..no biggie..and it pays to stay away from triggers that cause those cysts to retain fluid. ok..that said. now I have pain and a lump under my armpit...sorta even more closer toward my back. medical peeps...do you think it's something to be checked. and before you answer (because of course anyone would just say 'yes'), I simply can't afford the extra that comes with a battery of testing. my BC/BS.....sucks......yes, it does. even tho we pay ourselves the whopping $800.00 a MONTH for it. (another gripe..another time..LOL) is that a lympth (sp?) node area? I do shudder a little...my little brother had lymphoma. (he has been cancer free after chemo for approx. 5 yrs. now)

well I can't be sure but I know when I've got a bad cold or something coming on I get REALLY sore under my arm pits and the lymphnodes swell up horribly.

but it might be worth getting it checked

I've had them in the past with no problems ....but for your peace of mind , please have them checked ! Lymph nodes are the first signs off infection somewhere !

bubbat..lol..didn't you read that I don't want to waste time ($$$$$$$$$$$$) at the stupid docs? my 'peace of mind' is anything OUTSIDE of the doc's office. LOL!!!!!!!!!!! I have been fighting off a bit of a sore throat, so I'm gonna think maybe it's my body all geared up for fighting infection. I will give it this weekend. lots of rest..yada, yada...and of it still hurts to touch (let alone lift my left arm).........then doc will have me in his face. yeah..I'm thinking it's a node. and it HURTS big time.

Do you have any signs of an infection? cold? flu?

What does it feel like? Is it enlarged & painful? Is it small like a hard bean is under your skin? How long has it been there?

Generally, lymph nodes will swell up w/an infection, and this just hurts cuz of that process...which is normal...as long as it returns to its previous size in a week or so...

If its small, bean-like/irregular feeling/not so movable & painless...this is concerning. Painful ones are concerning as well if they keep growing or do not go back to normal size after a week or so. If you notice zero improvement or shrinking of it in the next few days..that would be when you'd want to start thinking about seeing a doc.

I am NOT a doctor by any means...what i've told you is just some very basics on lymph nodes that I learned in school (I am getting my doctorate in physical therapy)...we learn when we need to refer our patients to an MD...not how to treat anything, etc etc...

Feel it. How tender is it? Can you move it around or does it seem fixed in place? Is it red? Does it feel warm? Have you had a fever? Have you had ANY other symptoms - weight loss, fatigue, changes in appetite, etc.?

If it's fixed in place and you CAN'T move it, get it checked right away. Even if it's only a little sore. Especially if it's only a little sore. Money be damned, get it checked.

If it's VERY tender and/or red at all, it could be an abscess. Try applying warm compresses every 15 minutes whenever you can. Justin had one a few weeks ago and I helped him get rid of it by doing that. Might also help if you apply antibiotic ointment during the day when you can't do the warm compresses. (I recommend polysporin over neosporin because of resistance to neosporin. If you have bacitracin or bactroban that's better too. Even if the wound isn't open, there's a lot of glands in your armpit and it can soak in there somehow if it's an infected gland.) If this conservative treatment doesn't work and it continues to get bigger and more painful, then you may have to have it lanced. DO NOT squeeze it. That will only make it worse. If you can't afford to go to the doctor and get it lanced (if it comes to that) then let me know and I'll tell you what to do.

The fact that you say it's closer to your back tells me it's more likely a cyst or an abscess than a lymph node. Any chance you could get a picture?

it isn't red, and I don't have a fever. I can't move it. yep..it's like a bean under my skin. no changes in appetite..I am ALWAYS hungry. I solve that with little bites of meals thru the day, and it seems to work for me. one thing I know..it is NOT an abscess.

I ask here because I've sooooo been there before. many, many times in a doc's office with a 'lump'..that was nothing more than inflamed with fluid. (geez..take away my coffee..why don't you! LOL) but that was my breast itself. this is under my arm, and it's kind of cramping my style of activity. oh man...I'm giving it this weekend. if it still causes pain.....guess I'll call the doc. *sigh*. this blows.

your axillary area (under the arm) is where a lot of lymph nodes are. if you have a lymph node that's fixed in place, it could be bad.
