Default Name help

We've known for a few weeks now that we are having a baby girl. My husband isn't much help in making suggestions, but he's quick to veto something he doesn't like. For a first name we have pretty much decided on Alison/Allison. He's leaving the spelling up to me, but I keep going back and forth on which one I prefer.

I like Alison because it is the original spelling of the name. I also prefer the nickname "Ali" to the other variations. However she will almost always have to correct people on the spelling (but that's as simple as telling people 'Alison with one L' when asked what her name is), and we're also less likely to find things in stores personalized with that particular spelling (keychains, mugs, etc.). The inconveniences are minor, but it makes me really consider Allison just to make things simpler for her. I'm just having a really hard time making up my mind.

Also, we need a middle name. I'm thinking something short and simple (like Rose which my husband already vetoed ) that would go with our last name (Nelson). Any suggestions are welcome!

I think either would be just fine, and it's silly not to choose a name because they can't find mugs and keychains with their name on it, especially since now you can have anything custom made with her name on etsy.com. Nevertheless, I chose Allison because that's how people will probably spell it anyway. But I do like Ali better than Alli for short.

Congratulations by the way I really like the name, however you spell it.

Yeah the keychain/mug thing is silly. I mostly thought of it because one of my sisters named her little girl Kelli, and she told me that Kelli used to get upset because all the personalized stuff in the stores was spelled Kelly and she was mad that her name wasn't spelled that way too.

I am tempted to spell it Allison and just use Ali as a nickname anyways though.

Her nickname can still be "Ali" even if her name is Allison. A nickname can be anything, really, and is far less important, in my opinion, than the spelling of the full name. (You don't want people messing up the spelling on important documents...)

I think middle names are a wonderful way to honor loved ones. Any grandmothers or special people in your life? Even variations on those names could work.

The only person that really sprang to mind to use for her middle name is my husband's grandmother. She is a wonderful woman that is 88 years old and quite a spitfire. Unfortunately she's not doing so well, and at this point I'm hoping that she'll be around to meet the baby in February. The only thing is, her name is Bernice and that REALLY doesn't flow at all. I really liked Rose too, and think it sounds perfect. If I can't find something else to fit I may just keep suggesting it until he gives in

I think I definitely prefer Ali as a nickname as opposed to Allie, so will probably spell the nickname that way regardless of what I decide to do with the full name.

Ok so call me dense but really for a nickname, does spelling even matter? I mean... it's not like it is legal or anything, right? How often are you actually going to write it... Ali and Allie both are said the same, if I'm not mistaken. Also, what if she decides she likes Allie?
Seriously, not trying to be rude or anything, not at all lol it just seems... well, rather silly to me that the spelling of the nickname is an issue even

I may also be biased with Rose, as it's my middle name, but I <3 it lol. I agree, if you can't find anything else that you absolutely love, just keep bringing it up until you win

Then I'd go with Alison . Does your maiden name fit in ??? Both my girls dropped their middle names whe they married and picked up their maiden names .

haha, I know. It's too bad she can't just tell me now what she likes

I think subconsciously I'm making different excuses up to push my decision one way or the other.. But I'm making excuses for both spellings so I guess that means I really am undecided

I think I like the way Allison looks on paper a little better than Alison so I think I'm leaning further that way right now. I think it'll help me nail it down once I have a middle name too.
