chewing my blanket!

Whenever i let logan down the hall into my room he goes to my bed and starts chewing the blancket hanging off of it. i try to correct him by saying no and pushing him away but he keeps going for it. I want to let him sleep in my room but he can't because of his chewing. How do i stop this?

Have you tried putting his blanket on your bed ?

It's my quilt that covers the whole bed that he chews on.

Prevention. Prevention is always the first thing you think about. The more he practices the behavior, the harder it is to extinguish. Punishing him isn't very effective and can bring along detrimental side effects.

He is not ready to sleep in your room unless he is in a crate or is otherwise blocked from getting at your blanket....or anything else he might chew. How old is Logan?

Be sure to give him plenty of exercise, before bedtime is a good time. And give him something better to chew on. (from his point of view) Praise him when he is chewing on an appropriate chew toy. Give him a treat. Let him know what works to get him good things and he'll learn that chewing the blanket doesn't work because it isn't there! LOL.

Logan is 6 years old. I do give him something else to chew on. he plays with it for about five minuites the goes back to chewing the blanket.

You 'gotta find something he likes better and for longer than the blanket or put the blanket away on the top shelf of your closet. LOL. Without motivation, there is no training. Have you tried a Kong toy with some peanut butter spread thinly inside and with a few doggie treats that are hard to get out? Or a Nyla bone? Does he like those? If I had a dog that chewed my hand made quilt, you better believe it...I'd put that thing away until he got over it. The more he gets to practice that behavior, the more likely it will continue.

If you want him sleeping in your room, you could also let him sleep in a crate in your room. That way you're preventing the behavior.

How long have you had this problem?

I vote for a big crate. LOL. Is he crate trained? If not, feed him in there for a while, put super yummy treats in for him, a special chew toy, lots of praise. Increase the duration gradually and start out with the door left open. When he's comfy with that, close the door, but just for a few seconds...then minutes etc. If it's next to your bed, he should be pretty grateful to get to sleep in your room. LOL.

Grammy, I think she wants him in her room for sleepytime.

But when he goes in there every time you walk down the hall....and chews it, there's a good reason to put it up for now or close the door to your room. (?) You can't put him in a crate every time you walk down the hall. LOL. You'd be like me when I had some little foster kitties. My big dog wanted to eat them. And every time I had to use the bathroom, (where the kitties were) I had to lock up the big dog first because they scooted out so fast when the door got opened.

So, maybe crate for bedtime and quilt up and dog loose for daytime. (?)
