Whippet -Italian Greyhound Mix

There is one at a rescue that my kids and I are going to meet tomw. From what I read they are an affectionate, trainable breed mix. This doggie is one year old- lots of energy but the rescue says she wants to be a house dog not a yard dog.

Anyone have experience with this breed mix?

I've met both types of dogs on their own, but never seen a mix. Lucy loves to chase the whippet at our dog park!

Well its not a breed. Its a mix. You don't get a distinct type when you cross two breeds. That said at least these breeds are somewhat close.

I have whippets and I can say they are happy out going very active dogs. They are great with my child (8). Whippets can't take the cold (well mine can but they have long hair which is very rare) and are comfort loving dogs. Keeping one in a yard would be mean. They love to be with their people. They are smart dogs but not the easiest to train. Like most sighthounds they don't like repetitions.

Iggies are similar but less out going. Iggies are also pretty delicate dogs and can break easier than most breeds. They REALLY don't do well with any cold and are very comfort loving. They are also sighthounds.

This means that you should never let this dog off leash even with lots of training in an unfenced area. It will take a lot of training to have a good recall, but things like loose leash walking should be fairly easy.

Thanks - I live on the Texas Coast in Rockport - no cold weather here and i looked for heat tolerant breeds when I did my search.

So... does that mean the dog will be an outdoor dog? I really don't think a whippet/italian greyhound mix will be a candidate for being a strictly outdoor dog...

Almost all dogs should be house dogs.. It's rare that an outdoor dog situation works with people goign out to spend enough time and attention with a dog. Do you plan on making your new dog regardless of breed an outside one or just mentioning that the rescue says it belongs as an inside one?

I believe she mentioned in another post that she wants an indoor dog. Perhaps it's common in her area for people to leave their dogs outside and therefore she feels some dogs are house dogs and some are not, but she wants one that lives inside I believe.

I don't see any mention of intending for the dog to live outdoors.

A dog living in a hot climate and able to take part in outdoor activities ~ walking, playing, etc. ~ should be heat tolerant.
