Default JRT people - Barn hunt/Trailing & Locating

Ok, Brandy's first ever attempt at barn hunt and trailing and location are coming up in June and I was wondering if anyone could clarify somethings for me, so I don't screw up.
What does "no schooling is permitted in the starting area..." mean??
And is there any rules in the barn hunt??
Thanks a lot!

It means you can't go over there and practise first!

Basically in barn hunt you let your dog go. You can point out the tubes if you want. As soon as you are sure your dog has found the right one (the one with the rat) you indicate it to the judge and they stop the time.

Dog with the fastest time (and correct tube) wins.

I played with Cargo last year. We learned together. We did trailing and locating and barn hunt as well as GTG and ball toss. I love non sanctioned weirdness

I had NO clue going into many things wtf I was doing. Judges were always helpful. Barn hunt would have gone better if he KNEW what rat smelled like.. It is also partially luck of the draw. The one I did had 6 tubes of possible rat. So if it was to the left, and you let the dog off leash to the left first and it KNEW and alerted right then and there you could have a time of a few seconds.. versus it's to the left, you start at the right, it could take 15 seconds. Partially luck of the draw you know? But it was fun. And interesting to see him all yay about rats.

Smudge is VERY yay rats.. ran under a car last week and out the other side after one.. I wish I could compete at JRT events with my wanna be JRT trial. Kerri is hoping to hold NAMBR earth dog later this year if you want to come play though. I hope to have the first title non terrier in earth dog in north america as I figure there isn't another venue open to non terriers at this time

By rights the tunnel in the Barn Hunt should be scented and even a novice dog with high prey drives will indicate which tunnel is the right one, therefore taking part of the guessing game away from the handler, before releasing them.
Same with T & L, the dogs with the high drives will get excited and drag their owners towards the site, even from hundreds of feet away.

A funny note: I was talking to someone about T & L'ing once and when I stated that I would be bring rats for quarry for it, so the dogs could open up and mark on the quarry............this person thought I meant that we wanted the dogs to PEE on the quarry...

The only Barn Hunts I have been on are real ones with Raccoons.... LOL I did not even know it was done as a game, with all the trials I have been to I have never seen Barn Hunt as a game!

Basically its a bunch of tubes.. one has a rat. They are nestled in the cracks of hay bales. Every one I have done all the tubes are visible.. there are no tunnels... Dog has to indicate which one holds the rat.

I am going to the trial in June, going to enter Mindy in Vet racing, she is 1 year shy of senior

I also am thinking about agility, but I rarely did agility at JRTCC trials so I am not sure what class to enter, I think it would be the JRTCC version of starters but not sure.. LOL

I just noticed I need to get my entries off!

Should be fun, but I am not placing any expectations on Mindy, her current lifestyle as a retiree has her, ummm, a bit out of shape

I may put her in Lure Coursing as well, she was Reserve National Champion as a novice back in 2001, and I don't think she has done it since... LOL So I may give it a try for fun.

Agility is AAC rules and is a sanctioned class. You can enter any level but can't change it over the weekend (if I remember correctly) with out Qing your way up...

Have fun.. I won't be there as its too close to Dekka's due date (pretty much she is due then) Mark is judging though so you can say hi

So she is advanced in AAC, I should compete in the level 2 at JRTCC? What is Mark judging so I know where he is.. LOL

I am trying to decide just what to do with Mindy, don't want to do too much as both she and I are out of shape!
