My father's 10 month old deutche drakkar was run over yesterday at his house. The dog always was somewhat scary around cars because he seemed to have no clue of their dangers, and I feared something like this might happen.
I've never seen my Dad so emotional - he loved that dog. They had to put Willie to sleep because his spinal cord was severed. How do you wisen them up around cars?

Im really sorry hear of your dog being invloved in an RTA and with him being so young also
we do bond very closely to our dogs even in a short time. You can't really wisen dogs up around cars, i mean when dogs are loose, off lead whether properly trained or not they have a natural urge to roam or if they see something of interest they will go for it and they will cross the road without looking. If your father is thinking of getting a new dog, when he does decide to he should try seeking some help from a Professional Dog Trainer or Canine Behaviourist/Psychologist etc about cure certain problems and overcomming phobias. I hope this has been of some help, im sure there are other members that could advise you. WD

I am so sorry for such a loss. My heart goes out to you and your Dad. It is so sad to see that....especially when the pup's life was barely started.
It is our responsibility to keep our dogs safe from cars. They are not wise about them. A fence is a must when left off leash. I do send my condolences to your Dad and hope that before he gets another dog, he puts up a fence to keep that pup safe. |

Sorry to hear about yourloss.Know how you feel.We had to put our 15 yr old Poodle Ruffles to sleep 2 yrs ago due to old age.Dad had a hard time with it.he's the one that took Ruffles there to have it done and then buried him in acoffin he had made, putting carpet in it and covering him with a blanket. We didn't tell anybody for a few days since it was so hard getting over his loss,he was like a member of the family. We weren't going to get another dog,but dad missed him so much that 4 months later we bought a Bichon Frise called fritz. He has been the greatest pal to have around and if you ever get another dog, this is the kind to get.My Aunt phoned last night and told us they had their 13 yr old poodle Scooter to sleep. He brought up food and bood so the had no choice but to put him down.they are feeling kind of blue about as my Uncle took him for walks every day and let him sleep in their bed every night.Don't know if they will ever get another. As for running loose, you keep him leashed or behind a fence with a locked gate.Fritz has got out a few times himself ,when the gate has been open and we akmost lost him once ,but he's still with us and we are grateful for that.

That's a terrible way to lose a companion, and such a young pup, too.
You just can't teach a dog - especially a puppy - to stay away from cars and be able to depend on it 100%. A good enclosure and/or leash is really the only dependable safeguard. Please be sure to tell your Dad how very sorry we all are for the loss.

Sorry to hear about your dad's dog. It so true that when you get a dog no matter how brief the time spent with them they just fill up your heart forever. Good luck to your dad.
