Don't get a dachshund if you think that loud high pitched single barks that scare you to death and rattle your soul are not something you would like.

Don't get a Lab if you are lazy, don't like to vaccum and have a hard time thinking of novel ways to keep your food safe, such as having to duct tape your fridge shut.

Don't get a borzoi:

If you don't want dog hair on things.

If you don't want a dog the size of a pony

If you don't want people threatening to call AC on you because of your "starving collie"

If you ever plan on having your dog off leash

If you don't want to deal with a large driven and extremely fast hunter

If you want a dog that barks at non-raccoon intruders

If you want a dog that cares that your house is being broken into.

If you don't want to deal with a pokey nose right at crotch height (this is good for unwanted guests however...)

Don't get a Toller if you don't have a good sense of humour. There isn't much in life that they take seriously!

Don't get a Toller if you caren't willing to provide lots of exercise & mental stimulation. They can and will find very creative ways to entertain themselves! Much to the dismay of your home..

I cheated...laziness

Bichon Frise

If you want a dog who...

Is small but sturdy
Doesn't need much exercise
Has a curly coat that doesn't shed (one of the best breeds for allergy sufferers)
Makes a good watchdog, but is not aggressive
Is good with other pets
A Bichon Frise may be right for you.

If you don't want to deal with...

Notorious housebreaking difficulties
"Separation anxiety" (destructiveness and barking) when left alone too much
Shyness in some lines, or when not socialized enough
Stubbornness (mind of his own)
Frequent brushing and clipping of the curly coat
Barking
Chronic skin problems

A Bichon Frise may not be right for you.

Dachshund

you want a dog who...

Comes in a variety of sizes (all smallish)
Comes in a variety of coat types and colors
Is comical and entertaining
Doesn't need a lot of exercise
Makes a keen watchdog
Is sociable with other family pets, especially other Dachshunds
Lives a long time

A Dachshund may be right for you.

If you don't want to deal with...

Suspiciousness or sharpness toward strangers when not socialized enough
Scrappiness toward strange dogs
Stubbornness
Notorious housebreaking difficulties
Digging holes
Barking
Regular brushing/combing (Longhaired)
Regular clipping/trimming (Wirehaired)
A distinctive doggy odor
Serious back/spinal problems

A Dachshund may not be right for you.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

If you want a dog who...

Is small and soft, with large expressive eyes and a lovely feathered coat in a variety of striking colors
Adores comfort, cuddling in laps, and snuggling on soft pillows, yet has more athletic and outdoorsy instincts than you might think
Is peaceful with everyone
Is willing to please and responds well to praise and encouragement

A Cavalier King Charles Spaniel may be right for you.

If you don't want to deal with...

"Separation anxiety" (destructiveness and barking) when left alone too much
Timidity and shyness in some lines, or when not socialized enough
Chasing instincts
Regular brushing and combing
Lots of shedding
High prices
Extremely serious health problems and a short lifespan

A Cavalier may not be right for you.

Pekingese

If you want a dog who...

Is small but extremely sturdy, even chunky in build
Has a very short face, large expressive eyes, and a long thick coat that comes in many colors
Is one of the most dignified, supremely confident, and independent of the toy breeds
Is calm and quiet indoors and doesn't need much exercise
Is polite with strangers and usually accepting of other animals
If he respects you, will be well-mannered without much formal training required

A Pekingese may be right for you.

If you don't want to deal with...

Strong-willed mind of his own, requiring a confident owner who can take charge
Snorting, snuffling, wheezing, loud snoring
Regular brushing and combing
Heavy shedding
Slowness to housebreak
Gassiness (flatulence)
A multitude of health problems

A Pekingese may not be right for you.

Shih Tzu

If you want a dog who...

Is small, yet very sturdy, long-bodied and short-legged
Has a long flowing coat that comes in many colors and patterns
Carries himself with a proud, dignified, aristocratic bearing, yet is also happy and playful
Doesn't need much exercise
Is less yappy than other toy breeds
Is usually friendly with strangers and other pets

A Shih Tzu may be right for you.

If you don't want to deal with...

"Separation anxiety" (destructiveness and barking) when left alone too much
Stubbornness (mind of his own)
High coat maintenance (frequent brushing and combing, or clipping)
Housebreaking difficulties
Snorting, snuffling, snoring
Serious health problems

A Shih Tzu may not be right for you

Don't get a shelter mutt if you ever want to be able to answer the questions "What kind of dog is she?", "How old is she?" or "Is she a ______?"

Don't get a shelter mutt if you want to be able to explain your dog's strange quirks!

Don't get a shelter mutt if you don't want your dog to love and appreciate you forever for saving them (I SWEAR, Lucy knows!)

oh, they most DEF know. Esp ones that have come out of abusive homes.

Don't get a kelpie/lab cross if:

-you think hikes should end... ever.
-you don't like a dog who can and will catch rabbits/birds/rodents/racoons/squirrels/etc... especailly if they should happen to get inside your house.
-you think "sharing" actually entitles you to even a small part of something(ie the bed or the couch).
-you don't want a dog who can jump from a standstill onto or into things like the dinning room table, the counter, or the front seat(and normally in someone's lap) of a F250 when the window is down.
-you want a dog who has a "hunting off" switch.
-You think you should think for your dog.

Don't get a Pem if:

-You don't want your very own Napolean
-You don't think "world domination" can happen in your house
-You don't want to wear a fur coat everywhere you go
-You think "little legs" will stop him/her from getting into some serious mischief
-You think you should have control over your dog, and not the other way around.
-You don't want your dog to train you.
-You can't stand the eyeroll
-You don't want to live with a 24/7 comedian

Don't get a collie if:

-high pitched barks are not your thing
-You don't like the thought of giant "hair tumbleweeds" rolling through your house.
-You don't want to brush your BIG dog everyday

everything else about collies is wonderful though

Or if:
you don't like having toys strewn all over the house (or socks, towels, etc)

don't want to keep an eye out for every puddle or body of water on your walks.

don't like playing fetch endlessly

and maybe second most important (after the lazy thing)-
don't want a 70 pound lap dog.
