Neither of your lenses are considered 'fast.' They are good lenses. Very flexible. But a 'fast' lens is one that you can open up wide. To a f1.4 like sizzles or an f1.8 for mine. It really allows you to get a lot more light in and work with different shutter speeds. You can also fade out the background a lot more.

How much do those typically run? I'm going to buy a new lens sometime soon. I think though I may go for a more versatile lens with a larger zoom than I have for our Alaska trip. I don't shoot inside much anyways.

the nikon 50mm 1.8 that i have is about $150. If you are going for a longer lens you'll spend a lot more but it would be such a good toy. he he

Well, I know when I was in Yellowstone I wanted a longer lens. I'm sure it'll be the same in Alaska. If I don't go for that lens for now I'll be kicking myself when I get there.

Great thread! I was just about to ask the same thing as I'll be doing a ton of indoor photography at the bar once my flash gets here. I'm hoping to be able to afford a new lens, hopefully an f/1.4 before too long as well.
