Default Catahoula people ...

talk me out of getting one! lol

I've really always liked these dogs, but I'm yearning more and more to take the next step and actually GET one. I've found a few breeders in the state who show in performance and conformation (boycotting AKC of course) and they also health test.

So, give me some insight into the badness of the breed ...

Get one, they're GORGEOUS.

I would say they, they remind me of Bodhi

I've only had experience with one.... the shelter said he's catahoula but I'm actually not convinced he's full-blooded (or at least well-bred). Anyway, he was about a year old (don't know his upbringing) and very leery of men... Once he met them he was usually ok with them, but if he didn't know them he would growl and try to avoid the situation. He's also not great around cats (actually he's more scared of them than anything), and a very rough player with other dogs (wasn't aggressive, but needed to be with another dog with a lot of energy who would play rough back).

I don't want to make breed generalizations, though, and I'm sure that a lot of this dog's problems were due to bad socialization as a puppy. Plus the breed just doesn't really appeal to me (which is a little bit ironic, because I'm seriously considering getting a smooth collie ). Keep us posted!

they can be aloof with strangers, and they can also be territorial towards people and other animals that are not "theirs", they can be independent, very energetic, and need a "job" to do or they can be destructive when bored, they need an experienced owner

I'll write more later or hopefully gemp will see this

The ones I've dealt with were well bred and well socialized, so I haven't seen a bad one. They remind me a lot of my smoothies in personality, but with a squishible face. lol

Well now I'm going to make you want one even MORE with the pictures I will be posting soon of the two gorgeous pups I will be training. Hehehehh, see in that thread, and THEN try to pull yourself out of getting one of these guys. First time I met these two I fell in love, oh, and I'll be sure to get some videos of their cuteness, as well. They can be aloof with strangers, but love their owner, and are friendly and motivated...

And they allow my favorite "bad color" for collies - sable merle (red leopard) with bright blue eyes! :P

This pretty much describes my Collies. A CLD should fit right in!!

How you plan on resisting this face, I may never know...

If you're actually able to take on another dog, I'd have no arguments against a catahoula over any other dog.

My catahoula is one of the smartest and happiest dogs I've ever had.

And she loves water too

How could you say no to these eyes?
