Question Dew claws on back feet?

My mom was having a potluck party yesterday and one of her friends brought over their dog. I think they said she was a coonhound. Anyway, I noticed she had dew claws on her back feet. Is this just a mutation or what? One of the people said it was normal in the breed, but I'm not really sure why it would be...?

lots of dogs have dewclaws.. some are removed, some are left on, some have double dewclaws, and some are born without them (Chloe was born without them on her back legs, but she has front ones)

I've known a doxie and a St Bernard with back dew claws. Both of mine were born with only front ones, which they still have.

We have a dog here with dewclaws on the back - doubles, I believe.

None of my crew have them... I hadn't seen it until recently here in the forum. (The member - can't remember her name - posted pictures of them).

Really? I really haven't met any dogs with back dew claws(or I just haven't noticed them lol) My dogs don't have back ones(obviously =P) So I guess I just assumed it was abnormal to have them on the back feet..

Briards, Beacerons and Great Pyrs have double dew claws on their rear feet. It's a fault if they don't have them.

As far as single rear dew claws, I don't think it's a mutation. It's just something that happens every once in a while, I believe.

Bella had one rear dew claw, it was removed when she was spayed because it was very awkward and we were afraid she would tear it.

I've only nown Beaucerons with hind dewclaws and the owners leave trhem, must be the way they're supposed to be. Some breeds that are born with them will have them removed.
