While he gets along wonderfully with my cats and is all right around my ferret, he has an extremely high prey drive for rabbits, squirrels, raccoons, etc. I don't ever trust him off-leash because of that. With those long legs, that puppy can move!

Here's a picture of a of some Zeus-type southern curs...

Cute dogs!
Is that your breeder? those are some nice looking dogs. Poor cougar. Poor bear. lol

Sorry it took so long, but here are a few pics of my boy. This post might be a bit long, but since everyone seems so interested in the breed, I thought I'd give a description .

Blackmouth curs are hunting/utility dogs originally bred in the southern U.S.. The book Old Yeller was about a blackmouth cur. They're considered rare, but in the area of west Texas where I live, they're not that uncommon. They're usually fawn, although they can be found in other colors, and have a black muzzle, with or without a black mask and ears. The inside of their mouths are also black (the tongue is still pink, not like a chow). Zeus is the same height as my neighbor's Akita, which is a bit tall for a blackmouth, but not unusually so.

Zeus is very people-oriented. He loves everyone. My husband and I joke about him being the world's absolute worst guard dog. He NEVER barks, unless it's the occassional woof when playing with my husband. This dog absolutely lives for attention, and I actually find him more responsive to verbal praise and petting than my golden retriever was.

He is the best dog I've ever seen around children. No exaggeration. He was napping on the floor one day, and when I turned around, I caught my 1-year-old niece sitting on top of him. She was squealing happily and whacking him exuberantly in the head with a Nerf foam ball. Not only was Zeus not moving, but I swear he looked pleased with himself.

He gets along fabulously with our cats, but he definately has an extremely high prey drive towards squirrels, possums, etc. Do not trust this breed off-leash if there's any chance of them seeing a small animal. He mainly follows his nose like a scenthound, but doesn't get quite as "focused" about it as a bloodhound or coonhound.

As far as training goes, he's very responsive and learned basic commands well. Not quite as bright as my golden was, but he was so eager to please me and tried very hard. He was slow to housebreak, but he finally figured it out. Absolutely no food agression, people aggression, guarding problems, etc.

His one fault is that he's a chewer. It's not seperation anxiety, lack of exercise or boredom. He just genuinely loves to chew. We go through quite a lot of rawhide!

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this breed to anyone, especially people with children.

Now, here's my Zeus!

He's a little over a year old, and finally starting to outgrow some puppy habits.

I have a friend that owns a blackmouth cur. Apparently he crosses Curs with Catahoulas, pit bulls and heelers to get the "ultimate herding dog." He has bucking bulls and apparently the "crosses" won't back down from a bull and can take one by the nose and throw it if necessary.

I don't really know much about the breed. I know a lot of people who own bucking bull farms down south and out west have catahoula pit bull crosses, or pit bull heeler crosses b/c if a bull comes charging at you, you want a dog that is going to do something about it.

I'm not real familiar with them. But I do know a few bucking bull contractors and thats what they've told me. I really don't know lol
