Default New horse

No pics just yet but yup I got myself a new filly. She was a whole whopping $50 and is skin and bones. I saw the ad in the paper last weekend and wished I had the money to get her. I had no idea what she looked like and just knew she had no experience with a halter, stall, or trailer and is just a year old. I decided I would cut out the ad and set it aside promising that by this friday I would call and see if she was still there. If she was it was meant to be. Sure enough when I called this old man told me she was still there and he would cut off $10 if I could even catch her. So after my uncle left I drove over to the riding school I worked at to pick up the truck and trailer. I had already cleared it with my boss along with boarding her along with my 22 year old Mustang gelding Delsin. So my bosses daughter and I made the 15 minute drive to pick up my new horse.

When we got there I went and knocked on the owner of the farms door. He had to be atleast 90 and was probley just as thin as the filly and just didn't look so good. When he saw me he just nodded to the over grown field which included woods and goes. "She's out there somewhere. Good luck" and turned around and shut the door. So with that Jessica and I walked out into the snowy field to look for what he had called in the ad a "Cloudy white" filly. Which was why it took us almost 30 minuts to even found her in the woods. As I surveyed the area I noticed two buckets kind of nailed to a couple trees. One had corn feed and the other frozen water. Thats when I realized that the woods were the fillys only shelter as we could not find a lean to or barn. Only other thing I could consider was his tiny one car garage.

To make an extremely long story short it took us almost three hours to catch her without stressing her out. I did find out despite her wild up bringing she is a sucker for altoids. Lol probley not the best idea but it worked. It took us anouther two hours to coax her into the trailer. Which actually took us leaving and coming back with a pony and anouther trailer. Because she was was all about following that pony right up into the trailer. And thank god for the riding school being so close because she was ready to explode by the time we got her there. We let her straight out into a small pasture with just her and the pony Buck to keep her company for now. My boss gave me like I was crazy when we unloaded her but was also smiling because she is not the first "wild" horse I have worked with at his place. She's got a nice warm lean to with fresh water and grain until I can eventually maybe get her in a stall. But im not counting on that any time soon. She is white but she is of course caked with mudd and very thin. I would love to put her in the warm barn and beleive me I tried but she wasent having it.

I have no pictures just yet. Lol it would have been impossible to get pics anyways. But I promise as she progresses I will post pictures of her. Tomarow my vet is coming out to make sure everything is good and make sure she's not sick. Other than being underfed to me she looks really good she has alot of energy and is a spitfire. My boss surprised me by telling me until I can get her in a actual stall he will hold off on her board as long as I pay for her feed and vetting. He also offered me more shifts which is great because I really havent been working but a day or two a week with it being an off season. So its all kind of come together.

I forgot to mention she is a Appy/Arab cross. I have decided to name her Sadie as in The Beatles song "Sexy Sadie" just cause she is such a sassy little thing. She also despite probley never being properly groomed is a beautiful girl and im sure once I can get my hands on her will be a heart breaker in the stable. And since she has not been registered I plan for her registered name to be "Love Me Do" which is anouther Beatles song lol. I am up at 2am with only four hours of sleep too excited to see her today to sleep any longer. I have keys to let me in the barn but I think I will wait until the sun atleast comes up to see how she faired through the night. Atleast its gonna warm up today. Lol a whole 20 degrees lol its a heat wave!!

I plan to come prepared with plenty of treats since that seems to be the way to her heart. But im gonna follow her lead today. And once she has her vet check up im not gonna force anything else on her for awhile. I just plan to go out there everyday and get her used to me being around. I just want to gain her trust.

I fully intend to keep her. I am the kind of person who tries and wants to keep my horses until they die of old age. I have had my Mustang since he was nine and have had to jump through some hoops through that course of time to keep him. But I don't regret any of it because I have kept him healthy and happy. BUT with the recession if it becomes a problem and I really can't afford to keep both horses I may have to rehome her. But I wouldn't do that until I get her rehabilitated. And most likely my boss would be the one to buy her. But I really don't want to think about it. I just am going to think positive and pick up those extra hours and hopefully I will be Sadies forever home.

Sadie sounds like she's got a lot in common with her new owner

Lol thats pretty much exactly what my boss said. I spent three hours at the barn today. I just walked around the paddock not making eye contact or putting any pressure on my new girl. Little Buck thought it was great that my pockets were loaded with treats and found follow the leader a great game lol. Sadie wasent my biggest fan but she is Bucks and so that helped a bit. She doesent come any closer than she has to for treats streatching her neck like she is a little white giraffe. She was alot braver when she stole a carrot out of back pocket.

For the first couple hours she kept her ears plastered to the back of her head. Only occasionally flicking them forward in interest at Buck. She also wasent my biggest fan or any humans since first thing this morning the vet was there to check her over. And that was a visit I was holding my breath for. But she passed with a good health report she just needed a couple vaccines and anouther visit in anouther month. She also needs her feet taken care of badly but thats a whole nother issue.

Before I left though her plastered ears seemed to let loose and she actually stood about 6 feet away from me while Buck made his way back to the lean to. She seemed very curious and interested with her ears pricked and her head turned my way. Eventually she even lowered her head to pick around the snow. And thats when I knew it was time to go. She had given me what I wanted. So we ended it on a good note.

Im really not in any hurry with her.
