That is how they are broken down and yes, they are different.

On another note, the original name for the Great Dane was the boarhound.

"Pit Bull" is just a class of dogs, classes of dogs just include ones that either look similar or have similar jobs etc. Like "Husky" is not a breed of dog, it is a class of breeds that include breeds such as the Siberian HUsky, Alaskan Husky, Alaskan Malamute, Inuit Dog, etc.

Like already mentioned, AmStaff and Staffordshire are NOT the same though they are both "Pit Bulls". Another breed in this same class is the Bull Terrier.

There are many different types of the Bully breeds that are used as Boar Hunting Dogs - hence called boar dogs or boar hounds. Key ingredients of the breed are agility, tenacity and strength. Dogos, ABs, Bandoggs and other bull breeds excell at this "sport". You can find more information about Boardogs or Boarhounds here. Some pictures may be disturbing.

Isn't AmStaff short for American Staffordshire Terrier? And if you live in America and you shorten it up to Staffordshire Terrier that makes it a different breed? I'm so confused lol

Yes, am staff is short for american staffordshire terrier. Staffordshire terrier is short for staffordshire bull terrier. Not sure why anyone would shorten it to "staffordshire terrier".
