Default Sanction matches..

Haha, really stupid question... but I'm a complete novice when it comes to performance venues. There's a Rally Obedience Sanction Match next month. Is it just a fun match that really means nothing, but allows me to gain experience in Rally?

Pretty much. You go, get practice in the ring, feel for the way trialling works, and get judged so you know what to work on. Often the 'judges' are doing it to also gain themselves experience needed. We've done more conformation sanction matches than anything. In that venue the judges have to have had sanction judging assignments to get to be real judges eventually.

There is no stupid question .........
Having said that, yes fun matches allow you to train and work your dog with all those wonderful distractions of a real show or trial without the pressure, expense etc.
Anyone doing a sport or performance event is wise to find fun matches to attend and compete to learn the ropes, get the kinks out and to especially note what they need to work on.
