Default Someone FINALLY listened to me...

This morning the neighbor guy came over and introduced himself and asked, "Can I talk dogs with you?"
O.O
Nobody ever asks me that. This guy and his family, as of yet, do not have a dog... but will be getting one soon.
I obviously said sure, and he went on to ask me about several breeds, most of which were 'designer' (he asked about a peekapoo, terripoo, bichon-poo, a puggle and a few others) and upon learning that they're naught but glorified mutts, decided NOT to support any of the local breeders / mills (YAY). I talked him into going down to look at the shelter before he looked any where else.
They're looking for something small and low maintence grooming wise (this is their first dog since having kids. Their last one, a very young beagle, was hit by a car a few weeks before they had their first baby) but something that will like to play with the kids (ages are 3 and 5).

We also talked about food, toys, exercise, and crate training... all of which he LISTENED to. Then said he was glad to (finally) meet me, and would I go to the pound with him and his family some time next week!

I feel like I've done my good for the day, talking someone out of supporting some designer BYB. Apparentley this woman (whom he met at a local pet store where she was dropping off some pups) has like three or four different 'breeds' and has several litters all at once. Sounds like a puppy mill to me!!!

One experience like that can really make you believe in people again....until you read the next horrible story about someone stupid.

But anyhow, YAY! I hope they find a really great dog at the shelter.

Let us know what they find !! Glad that you're going with them !!! With kids that age , they sure don't need a small nippy breed !

That is great!!!

I always felt wonderful when I worked at PetSmart and swayed people from buying their small animals, and instead talked them into going to our SPCA and adopting one from there!!

It is so nice when people take your advise! I think people probably only did that cause I was in uniform..which is sad, because I have heard my old coworkers giving out WRONG advice before!!

Isn't that great! You must feel so proud, of yourself and your neighbor. If they don't know about petfinder, have them check it out, there are TONS of those small dogs/mixes in the IL shelters and rescues when you look there (although most are about 1 1/2 hours away).

Grammy, not all small dogs are nippy, they were bred to be COMPANIONS aka:not nippy but sweet lap dogs. If I were a small dog owner of a normal well socialized small breed dog I would take great offense to you saying that. Plus the family is still getting a small breed, big dogs, including Goldens, are not right for everyone. Small dogs need homes too and I'm sure they are not going to get a dog who nips the children, you need not worry.

Exactly. I was actually offended by the comment. My dogs are anything but nippy. They adore little kids and they might lick them but would not bite.
I go to small dog hours at the dog park and I have yet to meet a single nippy dog...

I didn't see that comment, but I do take offense as well since I have 11 small dogs and not ONE would EVER bite a human. Some of them were not raised with children, so I don't know what to expect..but just because they are small dogs does not mean they will bite a child. The dogs of mine that have met kids recently were great with kids! Cartman even licked a kid to death lol

It did make me feel good, guys.
And Bobsie is a little dog and is not 'nippy' unless you're a dog who's bigger than she is.
