We have this dog at the shelter and it makes the absolute weirdest sounds. It NEVER barks. It's almost like a coyote sound. He yips and yaps and yodels very very strangely. He gets upset if you leave him and starts making all these noises.
He's about 75 lbs. Tan/yellow with black around his muzzle and drop ears. His tail is a bit curly though, not too much, it just goes over his back slightly. H's got very short hair too. He's kind of a bruiser in that he has no manners right now. He's super sweet, though. Doesn't seem to be the brightest bulb either. I wish I had a picture. Any breeds come to mind with the speaking? They have him listed as a black mouth cur, which is possible as we're in the south.

Basenji and Husky are two that come to mind. I know there are more, but can't think of them at the moment!

Samoyeds can be talkers too.

Yeah, I came up with most of those but I totally cannot see him as a basenji mix! (That was my first thought when I heard him. I heard him before I saw him)
We've had some nordic breeds- the eskie or sammy mix we had was a yodeler as are the huskies, but I'd be shocked if he had a nordic breed in him. He looks basically like this dog: http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/images15...onlogpile2.JPG With this dog's ears: http://www.gotdogsonline.com/blackmo...h-cur-0026.jpg And a really weird tail that is carried up at an angle over the back. His face shape though is a bit more labbish. I'd probably have labeled him as a lab mix (lab shepherd if his coat wasn't so short) So any large shorthaired dogs that yodel?

Elin's Lab doesn't bark much but but goes between a yodel and a squeal when he gets excited ! Sound like he's being killed !

That reminds me of this one lab we have in the shelter. We got a pair- a puggle and a lab from some people who didn't want them anymore. So we kenneled them together. I was walking by with the water dishes and I hear this bark that sounds like it should come from a 2 lb chihuahua. I looked over at the puggle and told him to stop yapping (playfully). I came by again and this time I see the dog squeak but to my surprise it isn't the little puggle, but instead it's the big 90 lb oversized black lab. The other workers and I were in hysterics. It was the funniest thing!

I'm thinking Black-mouthed Cur, kind of like Gemp's Zeus.
