The only time I've used science diet was when Bailey was put on z/d and once afterwards bc one of his med problems was not present when I adopted him and that's what he was on. It did nothing, and he's no longer on it.

You can get something with much better ingredients for the same price.

Agreeing with everything already said here. It is overpriced and a pretty poor quality product. Petco/Petsmart don't carry very many good brands of food so it can be hard to find a good food.

20 years ago it was one of the better pet foods around, back when there wasn't much of anything available. Now there are new companies surpassing it in price and quality right and left.

....Dekka stole what I was going to say.

Hills products are not allowed in my house - I had too many problems with the cats on them.

I agree with all of the above. Science Diet is waaay overpriced. Just check out the ingredient list (I cut out the additives for the sake of brevity). Keep in mind that ingredients are listed in order from greatest to least. Corn meal and ground sorghum, yummy yum yum!

SCIENCE DIET: Chicken, corn meal, ground grain sorghum, ground wheat, chicken by-product meal, brewers rice, soybean meal, animal fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols and citric acid), chicken liver flavor, vegetable oil, dried egg product,
By comparison, here's the ingredients for Kirkland Signature. It's available at Costco for a MUCH lower price than Science Diet, and is considered one of the best inexpensive foods out there. Chicken, chicken meal, and whole brown rice. And notice they use actual veggies, and not just additives? Much better.

KIRKLAND: Chicken, chicken meal, whole grain brown rice, cracked pearled barley, chicken fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols and Vitamin E), egg product, beet pulp, potatoes, fishmeal, flaxseed, natural flavor, brewers dried yeast, millet, carrots, peas, kelp, apples, dried skim milk, cranberry powder
And if you compare it to Innova EVO, a premium food in the same price range as Science Diet, you can *really* see the difference. Here are the ingredients in Innova EVO. Just look at all those protein sources.

INNOVA EVO: Turkey, chicken, turkey meal, chicken meal, potato, herring meal, chicken fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols, a natural source of vitamin E), natural flavors, eggs, potassium chloride, choline chloride, calcium carbonate, garlic, apples, carrots, tomatoes, cottage cheese, alfalfa sprouts, dried chicory root, ascorbic acid, taurine, lecithin, rosemary extract, vitamins
So yeah. There are much better foods out there than Science Diet. If you let us know what kind of stores are available in your area (like petco or petsmart), maybe we can steer you in the direction of a better food.

Not a big fan of SD. Ive read somewhere that Science diet is only recommended by vets because of kickbacks... Duh.

Yeah, many many vets are paid to endorse the product. Science Diet kind of has a stranglehold on them.

I was told that when pet food first appeared on the market, they were one of the few out there and of course SD was much better than the table scraps that most dogs got. So it used to be a good kibble until people learned more about what good food really was. Now they're just outdated and need to change their recipe but they're relying on a reputation that they've had for a long time.
