Well, there is a thread like this on another forum that I visit daily.... and i'm shocked to see that there are actually some people out there who still believe that it's fine to use the "old school" methods of dog training, in other words, I am shocked that in this day and age, some people still hit when they do something wrong. I am VERY against "spanking" pets, as I believe that there are many other, much more effective methods of dog training. I feel that hitting pets when they do something wrong only leaves them confused, and can even potentially cause fear aggression.
So, how do you all feel about this?

I smack my dogs on their butts to get their attention, or to play with them. They seem to know the difference, based on my mood. So you can call me a little old-school. I don't take them over my knee and paddle them, but a swat on the ass when they're fixating on the cat? I've done that.

I am 100% against using this kind of physical punishment for any reason. It serves more to stroke the ego and satify feelings of anger for the human than it does to teach the pet a dang thing.
I just don't get why people can't just use the brains that they were given....

I don't use or believe in using physical force to punish a dog, I don't hit, shove, collar correct, pinch or yell at with the exception of a noise to get attention, it's not punishment as I simply make a noise which may be loud and then give a command once his ears pivot my way.

I don't believe in physical punishments either. My lab is fear aggressive, could you imagine what I'd create if I used physical punishment on her?
![]() My friend's husband has a doberman, and he believes in spanking her when she's bad, and shoving her face in her mess to housetrain. His dog is very sweet and loves attention, so I make sure to smother her in attention when I'm there. The poor thing is also very jumpy and afraid to do anything at all unless you tell her its ok first. Not a happy dog.

I am completely against spanking pets! It is ineffective and in my opinion cruel. There are so many other methods to training a dog, just like with children. Hitting shouldn't be used on either.

Yes!!!! Have you seen this little girl? She NEEDS to come home with me!!!!I used to get the odd one through class every now and then and then I ended up taking one home after a breeder neglect case. I've been in LOVE with this breed ever since. I've never met a more comical, silly, ruff n' tumble and DEVOTED dog in all my years. I'll always have a griffy to love. http://www.brusselsgriffonrescue.org...e08-11-08.html
