Well, for those sitting this out because your dog loves hot dogs too much -- that's kinda the point of training it in the first place.

I do have a question for anyone ~
Is this a trick that is better taught to a dog who already knows a retrieve?

Well, that wasn't anywhere near as impossible as I thought it'd be. One hotdog lasted our entire 10min training session, with just one dent! We still need to perfect her 'form', but I should be able to get a video by tomorrow.

Maybe when I get home I'll try it with Kiki too, though she doesn't really retrieve, so we'll see how it goes.

I'm trying this right now... does it count if we use a "Smart Dog"? LOL.

Fozzie, I'm very doubtful of. Very, very doubtful. Very. D= I'll try it just for the extra Corgi points!

Ok, well I learned one thing tonight, my agility dog who will not tug, will tug on a frozen hot dog!! Of course it also doesn't help when my kid and I are cracking up........its not a very effective way to get results for me.......although Petie's results were outstanding from his point of view, 2 hot dogs gone in moments, one fresh the other one frozen

For sure though rats are pretty clever I think theyd be at an advantage as they tend to stash food but sure!

Cool! That means I don't have to fight with my stepmom about it! LOL She hates it when I do anything with her dog.

I haven't started yet, I was thinking about it last night and I'd first have to train Phoebe to pick things up on command then to be sent to do it at a distance then to return, I'd have to teach an entire retrieve before even adding the hot dog. I'll have to see how quickly she learns to pick things up. I'm still teaching her to close the door! hahahahaha

I guess there's no way we could sub, like, a piece of bread if we can't afford to buy the hot dogs, eh? That would probably be an unfair advantage, since most dogs don't like bread like they like hot dogs.
