Thumbs up Make your own dog bone

Well i found this Childerns recipe book and it has a Recipe for homemade dog bones i was wondering if it was safe:

Here are the ingrediants:

Dog bones

1. All-purpose flour 2 cups 500mL
CornMeal 1 cup 250mL
Wheat germ 1/4cup 50mL
Beef boulillon powder 2 tsp. 10mL
Garlic powder 1/2tsp. 2 mL

2. Large egg 1 1
Cooking oil 1tbsp. 15mL
Hot water 1 cup 250mL

You will need: measuring spoons, measuring cups, a medium bowl, a mixing spoon, a rolling pin, a cookie sheet, a cookie cutter, oven mitts and a wire rack.

1. Turn the oven on to 275 F (140 C). Combine the first 5 ingredients in the bowl. stir.

Add egg, cooking oil, and water. Stir well. Roll out on a well-floured surfaced to a 1/2 inch (1cm) thickness. Cut into bone shapes. Arrange on the ungreased cookie sheet. Bake on the centre rack in the oven for about 2 hours until dry and very hard. Use the oven mitts to reamove the cookie sheet to the wire rack. Cool. Let stand over night to dry thoroughly. Store in a container with a lid/ Makes 10 big dog bones and 14 puppy bones.

So is it okay?

Default I make them also

Hi,
I have got a whole book of home made dog biscuits. And they are all tested for dogs. I mad ove a thousand the other month and sold them for the dog rescue. All teh ingredients were natural and the dogs loved them. I found my book over Ebay maybe you can check it out. i never make biscuits for us , but Christmas time and Easter I am in the kitchen making them for all my 12 doggie friends. Enjoy your baking because i do and also my doggies

it's definitely safe.

if you want to make those bones even more irresistible, add about half a pound of pureed liver to your base recipe. just dump it in the blender, add a little bit of water if necessary, and puree it for a few seconds.

if you do that tho, you'll have to grease your baking sheet extremely well, or the cookies will stick to it like crazy.

i use a cookie pan, line it with aluminum foil, then oil it well, pour in the batter, spread it evenly with a spatula and bake until a toothpick comes out clean. let cool for a while, then cut into small pieces.

Mordy, how about substituting oat flour for half of the flour and adding some molasses?

I have the Three Dog Bakery cookbook and love making biscuits for my girls. Sometimes I'll just come up with my own recipe and test it on the girls. They'll eat anything, I think there was only one batch they wouldn't eat.

renee, you can pretty much substitute any ground up grain or flour, regardless if oat, barley, rice or whatever else you want. you can even use potato starch for dogs who don't tolerate grains at all. the results may differ a bit, depending on the binding properties of a particular grain, but the dogs aren't as picky about that as humans.

a little molasses won't hurt either, just don't go overboard on sweeteners.
