Then the judges are looking at a "type" and not the standard..

Could you explain the difference between type and standard please?

To me, "type" means "Wow, you can really tell that dog is a *insert breed here* from the other end of the show grounds!" But as something of a breed purist, I feel type should match the standard.
Borzoimom might be referring to dogs who are typey in that they represent what is currently winning, rather than matching the letter of the standard. In other words, typey in the sense that they are what the fanciers are liking today. Maybe its got more flash, maybe its a larger head or a shorter leg, but either way, its fad, not standard.

Thanks Baha! I think it is the typey version from your second paragraph.

Many types within most standards....even in a breed as seemingly cookie cutter as Beagles. Our standard leave a lot of play...as do many others...my former breed, Akitas are notorious for being all over the place type wise, but all technically, fit the standard.

absolutely...red/white hounds have a tough time out there...esp in some areas. Let alone if you had some other actual hound color like blue, or luetick....even open marked sometimes. :eyeroll:

Like collies- its very hard for a merle to win over a sable because the standard has so much in it in " expression"- which of course is highly subjective..
