Default How Long are they a Puppy

So I was just curious as to what age everybody thought a puppy would no longer be considered a puppy.

It's not really that important, but it can win me a bet.

I said they were labelled a puppy until their first birthday.

I never want them to grow up , so they are always my puppers !!! Kidding aside , I think it depends on the breed and what you consider Puppyhood ....

I think technically it's when a dog is full-grown, generally one year old (less for small breeds, more for giant breeds).

To me, though, I call a dog a puppy if he's under about 7 months old. After that I consider them juveniles, or young adults. To me it's like calling a 16 year old a child.

Until they start behaving

I'm gonna say 18 months. Up until like 8 months I'll call them a "baby puppy" or "a little puppy"...after that i just stick to "puppy". I refered to Milo as "my puppy" the other day and then realized it's a little bit late for that.

I suppose the breed really plays a major part. It is hard to call an 80 pound 8 month old Bouvier a puppy.

I guess we might have to call this bet a draw.

Morgan is a seven year old puppy.

Ares, at eight, seems to have recently grown out of puppyhood.

It depends on the breed and how they mature.

My breed (great danes) maturely very slowly. They are still very much all puppy until well over a year of age.

Physically, they are not considered fully grown until between the age of 2-3. (Females typically at 2, males can take longer.)

Mentally, I'm not sure they EVER fully mature.

Kaylee's 9 months old and still acts so much like a stupid puppy with ADD that I can't imagine not saying she's a puppy still.

Hannah on the other hand seemed to mature pretty fast and grew out of the puppy phase pretty quick if I remember correctly
